Angry Unique SHUTTER / Overheat

Hey everyone!!!

So, this is pretty interesting! More issues with the 2003 LIMITED...

I just overhauled the car, seriously...

1) New rebuilt steering rack /outer tie rods / brake calipers/rotors/pads
2) New struts / isolator pads
3) New (SLIGHTLY thicker) radiator from Sunbelt
4) New radiator fan (TYC AMAZON)
5) New Radiator hoses
6) New Thermostat
7) New thermo-housing/gooseNeck
8) New PCV hoses
9) New Air Filter
10) Rebuilt factory alternator (Very reliable shop)
11) Rebuilt AC compressor (SAME SHOP as alternator)
12) New belts
13) New belt tensioner
14) New hood
15) Used good shape 41TE Transaxel
16) Rebuilt CV Joints
16) NEW AC high/LOW lines/expansion valve
18) New AC drier
19) Cleaned the Throttlebody
20) NEW Idle Air Control Valve (BORG WARNER)
21) New Torque Converter

Its borderline a BRAND-NEW car... and I spent a crap-ton of money. But there is still a problem.... This has been going on since before I did all this, however it is better, but still going on.

You now start the car fine, all self checks are good, idles smooth, put the AC on, still idles great! I personally have driven the car after all this and at lower speeds of 25 or less with and without the AC was fine. As soon as a I drove like this for 5 minutes, and then pushed it to about 40 MPH a few times, with the AC on, as I got to a stop sign the car shuttered again and almost turned off. RPMs dipped to like 300-500, temperature increased from NORMAL MID to a high 3/4 plus when it shuttered. I was able to move the car to normal speeds of 25, temp went right back down... and it never happened again for me since. My wife drove the car for the first time over 40 miles the other day.... She said it turned off three times, once after a long drive on the hwy 25 miles roughly as she came to a stop at the red light of the exit ramp, and two more times at red lights randomly.

It used to shut off every time and start right back up. Recently, 2 times it didn't fully turn off- one time it did. I've been using prestone universal coolant in the car for the last 5 years, and I was using 5W20 blend high mileage Valvoline max life. This last change, I switched to 5W30 synthetic, supertech (warren).

Does anyone have ANY ideas??????????

Does your engine light come on? If so what diagnostic trouble codes are you getting?

No engine light, no error codes... oil lamp comes on, but thats a usual light that comes on for this car.

That's not normal for any car and if it does come on, then there's most likely an issue.

If I am reading your post correctly it only does this problem when you have the A/C on?

Is your Pt Cruiser a 2003 Turbo or base model?

It depends when it is coming on. The oil light will indicate that the pressure is too low (or there is something wrong with the sender) but the comment was that it dropped to 300 rpm. That is not a sustainable idle and when it drops that low the oil pressure will be lower than spec and the light may come on. If that is the only time the light is coming on, I would not be looking to the oil pressure as part of this issue.

A new fan/motor does not guarantee its cooling, it could be a bad relay or the harness connector to the fan could be bad with loose connections on the inside which will stop the fan from running causing higher pressure in the AC system which will inturn cause lower idle and shudder. If its the ground in the connector that loose/damaged it will also prevent the low speed cooling to not work and you will have low speed or stoplight over heating.

My PT also had the oil light on when starting most of the time, but if I shut the car off and restarted it shut the light off, I learned to ignore it.

Just for giggles, when the car is cool, open the radiator cap and make sure the coolant is at the top of the neck.

Its a 2003 LIMITED
The oil lamp comes on at times not to be concerned. All 4 cylinders had a PSI of about 145 if I remember correctly when we tested it last month. MIND you this has been going on for YEARS. I've just dealt with it until we did ALL of the list above. The harness wires are ok. 2nd speed of fan kicks on as should every time. Does had new plugs/wires/coil pack (forgot to mention that). Oil lamp is normal for this car has a solid idiot light when the accessory is on or it turns off.

Oil PSI is good when the car drives, no lights there, I know thats fine. Fan connector is good, relays come WITH the fans I buy......... so like, yeah, not that...
