Default Brake peddle intermittently soft! Where to buy parts!

2003 PT Base.

My break peddle is intermittently soft. Sometimes it's fine and other times
flooring it with slow breaking.

I'm presuming that since I cannot see leaks on any of the break lines on the four wheels that the problem is the Brake Master Cylinder .

Where is the best place to order a replacement?

Also, is there any reason to think the break booster would be at fault and how to test it?

Sounds like classic failure of the seals in the master cylinder. The symptom is the brake pedal drifts to the floor when the brakes are applied. The cause is failure of the piston seal, the brake fluid leaks past the seal to the backside of the cylinder. When you let up on the brake pedal, the cylinder refills with the brake fluid, there's no apparent leak on the outside of the master cylinder.

Get it fixed soon, brakes are (obviously) not something to delay repairs on.

The fix is a new master cylinder. I can't advise a make, I've only replaced a couple on cars over the years. I think I just got a new master cylinder from the local auto parts store.

I seem to remember a bench bleeding procedure to prepare the master cylinder for installation, then bleeding air out at the master cylinder connection fittings after installation. It's generally an easy job. Follow the service manual for installation.

The master cylinder used to come with a bench bleeding kit.

Try Rockauto. They are members and post a discount code here.
Huuuge selection, and a lot of information on each choice.

Very inexpensive, too.

I'm confused by their part options:

Find a U-Pull bone yard... Got one for the '02 because of the proportioning valve (1) was bad causing right rear to over pressure / hold pressure and over heat. Paid like $15 for the master complete with proport valves. Washed and flushed it inside with fresh brake fluid, installed it and bled the whole system till clean was coming out each wheel bleed and no problems. Pretty easy install actually. Wife did the pump pump pump hold bleeding.

Finally replaced it today. Took 3 hours including bleeding and flushing the brakes lines. Not difficult; it just took time.

The plastic/rubber cap on the driver's side bleeder screw broke apart. Is there a particular size I can order off amazon? Or an alternative I can get at the Home Depot?
