Default On Board Computer Pennsylvania Inspection Problem

Reading Pa.
When I took my 2003 PT for inspection there were no codes, no warning lights, etc. As soon as they hooked it up to the PA inspection computer, I got check engine light and codes wrong. They checked it with their own diagnostic code reader, reset the codes and told me to drive it around for awhile. I came back they again checked with their reader and there were no codes. They hooked it up to the PA inspection Computer and instantly my check engine light came on and had codes again. What could be causing this?

Welcome to the forum

Even though you joined in 2016, this is your first post

Are you the original owner to your PT? Have you had it inspected before, in that state, with no problems?

I would go by any auto parts store and have them do a scan for any codes, they will do it for free.

Then I would try a different inspection station, to see if the problem duplicates elsewhere.

I bought the car used about 2 years back. I had it inspected last year at the same place and there were no problems. I think I will go to Autozone and see what their reader says and then go to another inspection station. Thanks!

You might check what codes you are getting.

Many code readers check for codes that set the Check Engine Light. But the smog testers also read "readiness". Sometimes folks call these readiness codes. You may want to get of list of what's wrong from the place doing the smog testing.

Also, the readers that check readiness don't actually cost more than those that don't. You just have to buy the right one.

I had this happen one time and after doing my own diagnosis it turned out the battery was bad. Make sure you do a battery load test to make sure your battery and battery charging system is working properly. The Pt Cruiser is sensitive to low battery voltages.
