Default 06 stutters and hesitates sometimes

OK, I did some searching with not much luck.

My '06 FIREBALL, has started hesitating on me, when partially warm. -sometimes. Other times it runs perfectly.

The other day, the MIL came on, but the "key dance" showed no codes. My code reader did show a P0132 (O2 sensor) code, but right after I checked it, the light went off by itself and the car ran ok. Yesterday the MIL came on again. This morning on the way to work it hesitated pretty badly for a few minutes, and then ran fine. I did the "key dance" with no codes showing.

On the way home the light was not on, and it ran fine again.

I don't want to just start randomly throwing parts and $$$ at it. Any ideas? I doubt that the P0132 code would cause the hesitation.

My thought is possibly a Crankshaft Position Sensor??

I'm stumped. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like an air system problem. Clean the MAF sensor, temperature sensor, clean the throttle body, see if that helps. If not, start pulling and checking O2 sensors, check for too much exhaust back pressure to diagnose a possible catalytic converter or blocked muffler, the you can further check fuel pressure, fuel filters, injectors, plus, wires, the coil and don't forget to check the ATF! There are so many things that can cause hesitation. A good place to start would be to use an OBDII sensor that can do freeze frame or live data readout to check many of the things I just mentioned. Good luck!!

Thanks for the suggestions. The hesitation feels/seems more like the ignition is cutting off, or missing, rather than a 'stuffed up' feeling - if that makes sense. I do have an OBD II reader that can record and freeze frame info, but I don't know what I would even be looking for.

And on last thing ATF??? Automatic Transmission Fluid? It's a 5-speed so if that is what you meant, it's not that .

Thanks!

if you don't know if your upstream O2 sensor was changed last, go ahead and change it now.

When my downstream O2 was bad, it would make my PT stall out & lights, stop signs & stuff.

I would suggest checking the wires going to the 02 sensors first.

Ah, didn't see that it's a 5 speed.

If you suspect it's the ignition, go ahead and replace the plugs and wires, followed by the coil (If necessary) since they are all cheap enough, especially if you haven;'t done them in a while. Check the wiring harness that feeds the coil too. MSD makes a coil and harness if you need one fore pretty cheap, it's a decent upgrade that nobody will ever see since it's buried under the manifold.

I would try resetting the PCM and TIPM, they might just be confused. It won't cost you anything and then you would have a baseline with those components.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

rckstein, is there a procedure in the Field Service Manuals to do this? Or can I find it somewhere else?

Thanks.

To my knowledge, nothing has ever been replaced on this car (except for the custom exhaust and wheels). The guy who had it before me didn't drive it a lot, and kept it in showroom condition. I am trying to do that as well. It only has 45,000 miles on it now. All of the markings from the assembly plant are still on everything.

I'm guessing it's about time for things to be old enough to start going bad (unfortunately).
