Default 5 speed hard to shift sometimes

I have had my 5-speed cruiser for a few weeks now. It shifts nice and easy most of the time but sometimes it takes some "force" to get it in gear....sometimes 1st through 5th. Seems like it gets worse the longer I drive it/more shifts. One of the shifter cable bushings was completely gone (one under the battery tray) and installing a new one seemed to make some of the "play" go away but I am still having sporadic issues with it being hard to shift. On another note, even when it is shifting good, if I take have hard it will not go into 3rd gear right away. The guy I bought the car from put a clutch in it right before I bought it. Any help would be appreciated.

If you never installed 'Booger Bushings', then that may be your issue.

Check this tread...A BAD 2001 PT Cruiser stick shift problem!

Yeah...it could be a bushing at the shifter. It's not a booger bushing brand, but I did replace the one under the battery tray. I just don't understand how it does good sometimes and then acts up other time. The car does make some noise when I hit bumps...could it possibly be a bad motor mount or something?

Not to scare you, but when mine was difficult, it got worse with heat. It turned out that the 2 piece flywheel had "de-laminated" and was screwing everything up. Car off, it shifted fine. Car on? Ugh. There were times it would get stuck in gear and i would have to shut it off to get out of reverse. Probably not your issue, but something to keep in mind on GTs.

I don't think it will be a motor mount. The trans and engine generally move as a unit. Possible the guy bodged the clutch job. Was it done at a shop? Maybe there is a warranty.

That's a little concerning! Regarding a botched clutch job....you think may be the adjustment is off? I guess that shouldn't be it since it shift fine other times though. I bought the car from a mechanic but there are no warranties with it unfortunately.

The quickest and cheapest fix is the booger bushings (if you haven't done them)...then if that doesn't fix your issue, move on to the expensive stuff.

Generic (not cruiser specific) hard shifting can be caused by the clutch not completely disengaging. Over working the synchros. How far down is the pedal when disengaged? How does it shift with the engine off? Download a repair manual and figure it out before something $$$$ breaks. Might be as simple as bleeding the line.

You have to take your foot off the gas to get it into 3rd gear when driving fast.
