Default Transmission case cracks

T350 5 speed manual 2003 Base

I was in the process of cleaning the transmission and reattaching it to the engine before putting them back in the car when I found this.

It is on the bellhousing in the area circled in red.

Looks like cracks, could be some kind of casting imperfections, could also be a catastrophe waiting to happen.

Anyone ever see anything like this before?

I have another transmission around here somewhere that used to pop out of 5th.

If I can find it I will see if those marks are there, if not I will probably swap out the bell housing.

Could be from a mold after making its 5,000,000th part. See if the "cracks" are raised from the surface. How does tapping sound?

can you pressure test it? use no more than 8psi or so... call up a mobile welder and have it gone over, its no big deal. id rather use the good trans and fix it...

Had one that I was using to replace a bad tranny and it turned out to be casting marks. sanded it down a bit to find no crack below surface.

Is the location of the suspected cracks near the driver side transmission mount?

Looks like casting shrink to me..... normally found around bosses. Happens during the molten alum inject and cooling at different rate as other areas of the mold.

For what its worth...this is not uncommon with many transmissions even all the way back to Power Glides.

However....they can and should be ground and welded as well many bracing added if any transmission is going to be used in competition or build large amounts of more then 30% of original stated claimed power rating from the auto manufacture.

The A604/41TE casting of interest examples as pictured in this thread are common !

JoeX thanks for this idea.

After pulling the bellhousing/case half off, I did not see any cracks on the inside.

I lightly took the dremel tool with a small carbide bit to a couple of the “cracks”

I did not find anything below the surface.

They really did look like cracks…….

I will be putting the case half back on.

I will be stopping to get the Anaerobic sealant on my way to the shop in the morning, I will probably replace the input shaft seal and the half shaft seals if they have them as well.

A wasted day of effort, but at least I know the case is solid.

Thank you everyone for the help, this forum is awesome.

Peter
