Default Transmission not shifting and speedo ot working

Greetings all...
So this morning I was driving to the store and the autostick wouldn't shift out of 2nd. I stopped, and went back into auto mode and it will not shift out of 2nd still.
I noticed on the drive home that the speedo wasn't operational either.
I guessed it was some kind of limp mode..and I looked it up, and found a bunch of info on the subject .....too much in fact. So...my question to the group is what the most likely suspect is. I don't have a bunch of cash, and I don't have a bunch of tools. So I'm just trying to narrow it down to avoid as much guess work as I can.

Had a similar situation with my daughter's Neon. I seem to remember it throwing a Check Engine Light, it wouldn't shift out of first and the speedometer didn't work. It ended up being the connector to the transmission output speed sensor (obviously, the other cause would be a defective transmission output speed sensor).

Well.... problem solved. Once I took out the airbox and battery bits...I saw that the pigtail to the sensor had been spliced....badly. So I stripped off some of the insulation and reconnected it. Not a perfect job, so I'll revisit it Thursday and do a more permanent fix.
Anyone have any idea what the harness is I'll have to replace is called? Maybe a part number ..a crystal ball even ....lol.

You could get the wiring harness parts at a local salvage yard. Out of curiosity, I checked https://www.rockauto.com (remembering I had gotten another connector there). They seem to have it, search your car, electrical-connector and vehicle / speed sensor output connector. A good thing to use to seal splices in wire is adhesive lined heatshrink. The adhesive is a hot melt stuff and it helps to seal the splice.

Thanks for that man...I'm getting the tail light from RA...I'll just order them together.
Yep I have the heat shrink tubes...picked those up already, and if any of you guys haven't tried this yet. In close quarters when you can't remove the harness...use a el-cheapo brand torch lighter found at your local quick-E Mart..couple bucks and they work well when you can't get a heat gun in there.
