Default How to fix wobbly manual trans shifter

The shifter in my GT 5 speed has become very wobbly. I changed the bushings on the cable ends and that fixed the excessive fore and aft play. When I am in any gear the shifter can be moved from side to side. There is at least an inch or 2 of sideways play. Miraculously it still shifts OK. Anyone know whats wrong with it?

Cool Re: How to fix wobbly manual trans shifter

Did you change all four bushings?

Yeah, that was my question too. I've had a couple of shifter bushing failures that left me without reverse, on the road. Fortunately, I was able to get the car home and replace the bad bushings. Check 'em all, don't let it strand you out on the road.

I have the Booger bushings in mine and have had a couple of them break at different times. It still shifted OK but the shifter had lots of extra play...

The repair kit came with 2 bushings for the trans side and one for the shifter side. My play is side to side not front to back. So if it's in first gear the shifter moves side to side. Is there a other bushing in the shifter.

There are two cables. Each cable has a bushing at each end, four bushings total.

Two bushings are at the top of the transmission. You can see one bushing by looking down between the air box and engine. To see the other bushing you have to remove the air box. To replace it, you have to remove the air box bracket (if memory serves me correctly).

Two bushings are under the center console. To examine them you have to remove the center console. One bushing is on the passenger side. The other bushing is on the driver's side.

In general, if you own a manual transmission and you're going to keep it for a while, keep shifter spare bushings on hand. They may be considered a "wear item".
