Default Starter issues when engine is warm - awful metallic noise

Does anbody know this issue? When my Cruiser is cold it starts perfectly. But when the engine is warm and I turn the ignition switch there is an awful noise. It sounds like the turning starter pinion crashes into the flywheel.
Hoping that I could overhaul the starter I removed it. It was quite a pain on the GT. When I tried to remove the fan I broke the handle of the oil dipstick.
However, the starter pinion looks still good (only tried a few times to start with the warm engine). Anybody has an idea what to look for at the starter?

Thanks,
Robi

The bushing are likely worn out in the starter. This allows the shaft to shift position slightly when in a bind. That causes misalignment of the starter drive. When cool the starter is less likely to bind. When hot, it does bind and the misalignment occurs. It might be something different, but this is a fairly common set of symptoms on many cars going back to the 1950's and even older.

Thanks for your answer! That makes sense. I will check if I can do it myself.

Okay, I gave up and bought an aftermarket starter :-)
Now, the starter pinion angles look different. Is that a problem? In the sheets it states that it fits for PT GTs.

Will work
Cut different to allow easier ring gear engagement

I hope the new starter works. The "awful metallic noise" made me think of when my GT's 2 piece flywheel delaminated. I pray that is not your issue.

Flywheel looks good and when cold everything was fine. But yeah, you never know.
Unfortunately, I could't fix the problem since the "new" starter seems to have a problem too. It turns but does not move forward.
Bad luck. I will buy now an oem.

Mine looked fine too. Even had a qualified repair shop checking it. It would shift fine when cold/not running, but get it started and all kinds of weirdness ensued. Your symptoms don't directly align with mine. It was just my initial fear when I heard what you said.

Was it a rebuilt starter?
