Default car died suddenly, while waiting at a red light

Hi, all, LTNS, I hate to bother everyone with my plethora of car issues. But this car is my sole transportation and I need it to run. Unfortunately, stopping at a red light does not qualify as "running".

Here's what happened. Car has been running great. Up to date on service, etc, except for lower control arms that need replacing but that's neither here nor there.

Some of the major repairs:

timing belt was replaced about 70k ago

transmission (used not rebuilt) was replaced about a month ago at 163475

car died yesterday at 164791.

no CEL

key dance does not perform the word "done" like it used to.

now it shows the mileage instead.

I know there is a way to run the system through a check to verify that all of the idiot lights are working but I can't remember how.

Shop has checked battery, alternator and fuses and they are all OK.

FORGOT TO MENTION: Shop says they cannot get the OBD reader to work. AND for about the past couple of months, fuel gauge does not go to the top when filling up.

Any ideas?

I got your PM. The inability for the shop to read the OBD port likely means one of two things. One might be a broken wire somewhere. The second is a dead PCM. It could also be a bad TIPM but those normally go bad on 2006 PT's. 2001 thru 2005 PT's don't have a TIPM and 2007 and up PT's don't seem to have this problem much. Here's what I would do:

I'd start by taking both battery cable loose and touching them together for 10 minutes. Then I'd reinstall and see if that fixes the issue.

If no joy, I'd start with inspecting all the wiring going to the PCM. I'd look for anything broke or frayed. Next, I'd pull the plugs from the PCM and inspect them. I'd look for dirt or oil. A bad oil sending unit will pump oil up the wiring harness loom to the PCM on these cars. It happened to me.

If I could not find a problem I'd pull the PCM. I'd then pull a used PCM from a salvage yard PT of the same year model. I'd try to find a wrecked one if I could since that one would have likely been running fine down the road when wrecked. I would then try the used PCM in my PT.

If the salvage PCM is good and my old one is bad, my PT should then start for a few second and then die due to the SKIM not matching the sentry key anymore. If that happens and if I can read from the OBD port now, I'd send the salvage PCM to Myckee for flashing to my VIN. You can reach Myckee by PM.

Others may have additional things to try as well.

I always check recent "fixes" first. Crushed or stretched wiring, grounds. On my 280z, while installing wheel well plastic I screwed right through the metal into the wiring harness.

Imagine what could get disturbed while replacing the transmission.
Also check fuel pressure, spark and fuel injection if your able.

I would suggest finding a good mechanic that knows how to fix Pt Cruisers.

Looks like you are still looking for a good Certified Mechanic.

I recommend that you start simple. In my case it was the starter relay switch also you can substitute the horn relay fuse to test i have a 02 touring auto

Deleted, as I mis-read the original post and now have nothing to add.
