Try this:

TSB# 1900601A (Component: Steering: Column - Experiencing steering column click sound when the steering wheel is turned).

It is probably the clockspring in your steering column. Seems to be a hot topic of discussion all of a sudden.

When I had 2300 miles on my pt something happened when i was driving down the street and it ground and binded and made the worst noise. It turns out that something happened with my power steering. I got it into the dealer and they fixed it that day. They told me that the power steering pulley in is another pulley with a rubber washer or bushing connecting the 2. To this day 11000 miles later still squeels and some times doesn't work.

Update on my rubbing sound when even slightly turning the steering wheel:

Took it to my 5-Star dealer. They worked on it for a couple of hours, lubricated the point where the steering column goes through the boot and said "we took it for a 4 mile test drive, it's fixed."

I drove it 4 feet and it started doing the same thing it had done before but not as loud. Got the service writer to take it back into the shop to try again. After another 15 minutes they determined that they really didn't know what the problem was. Said they would have to call Chrysler's support group and then they might have to order parts. I left with the car and they called me about 45 minutes later to say that support was aware of the problem and they were ordering Krylox (part # 5049059AA) to use on the rack and pinon. I will be taking my GT back on Monday to have the work done.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I love the car looking loke a 37' Ford, I just don't want it to sound like one.

Michelleday

Please keep me posted on what they do. I think I am having the same problem. Explain to me where the noise is coming from? Is it where the steering meets the transmission in the compartment?? Mine is still making the chirping/squeeking sound as I turn right or go over bumps. I took it to the 5 star dealer and they keep telling me they cannot hear it. But the second I drive off the lot, squeek squeek squeek. It's driving me nuts.

Thanks

It's cold outside. I turn the steering wheel off center to take a turn and hear (and feel) a mild grinding noise. If I turn and hold the wheel at a stop, same thing. HOWEVER it does not do this all the time.

Have any of you had a bad power steering pump?

I also have recently noticed that when I turn the steering wheel slightly from one side to the other on my GT, I get a sound like rubber squeaking. I have checked the power steering fluid and it is on full.

Will probably take it to the dealer next week although I hate letting it out of my sight.

The noise in the steering column continues. Dealer put in the Krytox lubricant and it didn't help (what a surprise!!). They called STAR and were told to replace the rack and pinion. Parts are on order and should be in toward the end of the week. I will provide an update when they complete the replacement.
