Default Remove/bypass Sentry Key Immobilizer system?

Working on my sister's 2003 PT. it has the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module security system.

For the last six months of so it has been setting the trouble code P 1686: no messages received from the Smart Key Immobilizer Module.

Roughly the same time this code first set the car started stalling randomly. Sometimes it would restart immediately, other times it would have to sit awhile and then it would start.

Is it possible to remove or bypass the immobilizer module? Even if just for testing purposes? I want to be sure I am actually fixing the problem but I won't know unless I can remove the immobilizer from the equation.

from what I understand, the SKIM module can be de-programmed from your main computer PCM, you just need to remove it [engine pcm] and have it shipped out to someone who can do it and then get it re-installed.

something that came up from a google search.

however your issue needs to be completely troubleshooted. i have had problems in this arena of symptoms and it ended up being the starter relay - the receiver pins in the fuse box got loose over time and din't clamp enough, sometimes i needed to push down on the relay while someone attempted to start.

Thanks. I agree on the troubleshooting. My brother just went through this on his 02 PT and he ended up replacing every sensor on the 5v+ feed to the coil, the engine wiring harness, and the relay before he discovered it was the cam position magnet under the cam position sensor.

I will do more toriubleshooting and get it running and then get a computer reprogrammed to have no SKIM.

Agreed on the troubleshooting. It likely is a wiring issue, as a skim module failure would be a rare occurrence. Check the connector on the skim to make sure it is fully seated. You could unplug and replug it a few times to make sure.

Is your car a turbo? If not, then you can probably find a PCM that never had skim enabled in the first place as 2003 was one of the last years it was optional. For the cost to pay someone to remove the skim, you could probably buy a used PCM that doesn't have to be messed with.

My tool will remove the skim at least partially. It may leave the light illuminated on the dash or it may not, but the car will run without the module or correct key being used.
