Default power steering leak

the fitting going into the bottom of the pump is leaking. is there a special O ring that goes on the fitting, if so where do I get one?

You have a 2001 PT with several hundred thousand miles on it. Right? And didn't you change out the line, pump and tank about nine years ago?

If me, I would try tightening the fitting first. It may have just became loose. If no joy, take the fitting loose and check the o-ring. If may have deteriorated over time.

The correct answer is polyacrylate. It's normally black or red and looks like standard butyl rubber but is much better for power steering and automatic transmission applications.

Parts stored often have some replacement power steering o-rings in the Dorman/"HELP" brand. They are normally in the Red HELP bubble packs out on the floor of the store. There's also often some new ones in a "power steering seal kit" but you end up paying for lots of stuff you don't need. I believe most Advanced Auto stores keep both the HELP bubble pack and the seal kit in stock. Some places like NAPA might have individual o-rings for power steering.

If me, I'd take my old o-ring with me when I went to the parts store.

I found some online but they are either green or black (bulk) no red. will these work or do they have to be red for high pressure? It sure is a pain to change the O ring.

Color doesn't matter. What matters is the type of material they are made out of. If the spec says they are good for power steering and/or automatic transmissions, then you are likely okay.

If it was recalled...take it to the dealer, they'll look up your VIN & if it's never been fixed, they'll fix it for free. If it has been fixed before, you pay.
