Per this thread, I found a good set of instructions...

To those who started to take the silencers out (like me) and didn't have specific instructions, I thought I would add more detail. ('cause I couldn't figure out how to get the air box out for example).

I have a 2004 2.4L

1. take off hose to turbo (in my case) that comes off the top of the air box using a screwdriver to loose the clamp. Pull it back an inch or so out of the way.

2. release two latches holding air box down (one on each side).

3. Lift off the cover towards windshield. There are 4 or 5 plastic slots holding it onto the back. Take out air filter (remembering dirty side down)

4. Don't do like I did and try to take out the two silencers while it is still in the air box (doh!). At this point the air box is held down by plastic studs that go into rubber gromets. Just rock it back and forth a little bit and pull straight out. (or sorta straight out as the snorkel has to clear everything.) Go ahead and give it a good tug! After it is loose and you can get your fingers on it, pull off the small blow back hose attached to the left hand side of the air box. Finish by pulling the airbox the rest of the way out of the engine compartment.

5. Now you've got two chores. First, in the top of the lid is one white, round piece of plastic leading to the turbo hose. With a screwdriver you can pull back a white tab inside the opening and then it will slide UPWARD out of the lid. Take the whole thing out.

6. On the air box, use a flat screwdriver to push on the two releases top and bottom on the right side of the air box. You can then wiggle the "snorkel" shaped piece until it slides out to the right. Removing the two top clamps by loosening their respective latches, you will then see the bottom silencer that is filled with holes.

7. I used duct tape and covered them all up top and bottom. re-install the two clamps and push the "snorkel" back into position.
It should click into place.

8. Re-install everything in reverse order making sure the air-filter is not upside down, the blow back hose is connected, and the air box has a good seal.

Hope this helps! [8)]
I was able to complete everything up to step 6. From that point on, there were several clips, which I had trouble getting to one of, so I left them alone. I took some pictures and I will post them so hopefully someone can give me better insight.

Nope. The only mods I've done with all my cars ever since high school was (1) install a windshield antenna for my subaru back in '84, installing power chord for my radar detector on all my cars, and removing the silencer from the intake airbox (today). Any other stuff regarding "working" on cars was just topped off any fluids & checked tires. Any other stuff, I brought it in to the shop. Of course, give me a computer and I can strip it down & assemble it back together. I can also apply any mod for the computer you need

But thanks to forums, such as this, I am learning alot about my car. In fact, it's kind of cool how I can now converse with my other buddies who mod their WRX's (non STI). I'm willing to apply any mod (as long as it has simple instructions and diagrams in ENGLISH) for my '04 PT GT ONLY if it requires no special tools, drilling, sanding, etc.

Don't worry. I won't hold anything back I know I'm ignorant about cars and I'm not shy about asking questions. Besides, I'm sure we've all been there in the beginning. I'm just a late bloomer.

Anyway, below is a pic of my airbox with some letters and arrows to some of the clips. I'm confused about the clips to remove. I posted a pic of my airbox with the filter removed so that someone can point out which clips should be removed.

(Click here, if the image does not load.)

On my photo above, there are clips on 'A' and 'B', and a tab where 'C' is. As described on Step 6, where should I apply the screwdriver at?...

Which one is the snorkel, 'd' or 'e'?

Just curious... [:I] Has anybody noticed any change in fuel consumption, either up or down after removing the white silencer from inside the air box. I thought mine dropped (~19mpg)initially, but now it seems to be improving (~21-22mpg).

I thought it got worse, from 22-24 MPG to 16-19 MPG. Unfortunately, there were several factors that changed...
1. Removed silencer
2. Filled up with gas containing 10% ethenol. Previous fillups did not contain any ethenol.
3. I did not fill up all the way up during these last fillups.

With the above changes, I can't really verify it was any of the above. I placed the silencer back on and filled up (all the way) using gas NOT containing any ethenol. So far, I am back to my 22-24 MPG. Next week, I will remove the silencer to see if it makes a difference.

I reinstalled mine and I'm going to keep an eye on this to see if it improves mileage.

Eddie-

In answer to your earlier post about the airbox and clips, etc..... The airbox is held in by 2 little rubber donuts that posts on the bottom of the box fit into. There is also a litlle hose running into the box from the engine side, behind the small dirty white filter. Disconnect that hose, then just grasp two sides of the box and pull straight up with a slight side to side motion, and it will come right out. Then you can easily mod your snorkel in whatever fashion you so desire......

Harry

Thanks harry_1321. I've actually figured it out. I'm just a little reluctant about messing things up with my PT. After all, it's only about a month old and I don't want to screw things so badly that it ends up to be a $22K driveway ornament.

it amuses me how everyone is so concerned with their fuel mileage
on average the cruisers will get about 20-22MPG and i really dont care

I like to step on it so my mileage probably stinks, maybe ill calculate it the next time i fill up. for now im only concerned with my SPG per gallon which is off the charts, man i love this car

dont forget that the computer modifys the fuel calculation and disconnecting the battery could help to improve economy

I've manage to take off the silencer (again) and also the small intake tube (aka snorkel). I've noticed that some people removed the snorkel and the black piece that holds the snorkel, some didn't. I removed to see if I could hear a noise during high acceleration and also the prep for the Airade CAI system, which requires you to remove it anyways.

So far with the current items removed, I am getting about 18-20 mpg. It's not as great as before, but I also started driving as I normally would, instead of slow and conservative with fuel.
