two other reasons i can think of to keep at least a quarter tank. perhaps this first one is an old wives tale or no longer true, but i have always been told that when the tank gets low, any dirt or other junk settled in the bottom of the tank can get stirred up and clog up the filter/pump, or worse, get in the engine. second, the one i always tell my wife, you should have enough gas in the tank in case of an emergency. if you need to get out of town or if you are being followed and need to get to a safe place, it is best to make sure you have enough to get there. after the northridge earthquake several year ago, i had a friend that could not drive anywhere because he was all but out of gas, and most stations were out of gas or closed for days after. he was lucky i had a full tank, and could get him and take him where he needed to go. you never know when you will need to go more than a mile!
