Default clunking noise from rear

I have a 2002 Limited 50k. Within the past month, there has been a "thunking" type noise from the rear that can be duplicated by moving the rear of the car from side to side. The dealer thinks it might be the ball joint?? on the sway bar?? (I'm not sure I comprehended all he was telling me.) It'll be $150. or so to put up on the rack, check it out for sure and fix.Any ideas? Does this sound about right? Thanks.

If you can duplicate the sound standing still, you could buy a set of ramps at the local auto store for a lot less than $150. Just back up on them and have a friend shake the car while you look. If you've never used ramps before be careful, have a spotter guide you up, put it in Park and set the Park Brake. You may even chock the front wheels.

How bout just taking to your nearest exhaust/brakes dealer and tell them about the noise. They will usually do an inspection for free thinking they can sell you any parts you need. Let them tell you what they find and make a decision then to let them fix it or take it back to the dealer. If your not sure, ask them first if they'll check it out but not obligate you to have it fixed there and then.

Could it be the spare tire?

The Watts Link has been reported in the past to be the cause of many clunking/thunking sounds coming from the rear. Installing/replacing with new bushings usually solve the problem.
