Default Odometer & Trip Odometer

Is anyone finding his or her “trip” odometer resetting itself when you start the PT in the morning?
We leave our odometer in the “Trip” mode all of the time and the last two mornings when I started the PT the odometer was in the “total” mode and when I switched it to the “Trip” mode it was reset to “0.0”.
This happened twice in January and I wrote it off due to the extreme cold weather at the time.
The dealer is scratching his head and scheduled the PT for service on 3/26 and a call to S.T.A.R. for assistance.
It is more of a nuisance than anything else but was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same problem.

Thanks

I live in Florida so it's not cold and it has happened to me twice now. If all the power goes off like a cable to the battewry is disconnected it does it but mine are tight and the radio and clock stay as set. Would like to know what is up if you get it fixed. I leave mine on trip also so I guess thats when you notice. Most people don't so it may be more of a problem than most think. I have a GT and trip keeps me in mind of my gas mileage as prices are so high now.

Trip Odometer Update,
Went to the dealer with my notes in hand of the dates, times and outside temperatures, etc. of when these unwanted "resets" occured. They found no codes stored in the system which I already knew. They contacted S.T.A.R. with my notes and they were directed to replace the instrument cluster and fax them my notes and ship a copy with the returned cluster for further testing.
They apparently have had some problems with the cluster which may be caused by static discharge and I was able to provide the most detail on when the resets occured. The new cluster will be in Friday or Monday, it must be programmed with my VIN, mileage, options, etc.
Note, our PT was built after the production date of the clusters that were recalled to re-flash the cluster software.

So far so good; it has been about two months and almost 2,000 miles with no problem. I am glad because 1) I hate mysteries, and 2) I use the trip odometer continually.

I wonder how many other systems are affected by these marginal grounds.

I contacted Chrysler directly...they called me at home and told me to call the dealer for service...I take it in next Tuesday...suspect that at best they will replace the Instrument Cluster...(they have done that on other peoples cars) - the problem almost surely will not be fixed...I told them ALL of this in my two letters...I even gave them the website on this forum where the other reports of this problem...I was given their 800 number in case I was not satisfied...the number is 1-800-992-1997 - you can tell them that car VIN 3CFY48B43T594227 has the same problem that yours has and that they were notified by the owner in writing...owners name Robert Wilbarg....I encourage anyone with this probelm to contact Crysler and DEMAND they get it fixed...

The dealer kept the car overnight...no fault codes...had printed the info from this forum and the PT Cruiser Forum and gave it to the service people...they took the battery ground and scraped the paint away - made it a good ground - got the car back this afternoon...THE TRIP ODOMETER HAD NOT RESET EVEN WHEN THEY TOOK THE BATTERY GROUND OFF .... but it did reset tonight when my wife took the car to Yoga class....will repeat disconnecting the ground wire tomorrow - the trip odometer didn't reset and the radio buttons didn't reset ...... tomorrow I call Chrysler - see where we go from here .... if it checks out that they had disconnected the ground wire from the battery to clean the contact area....then that ain't the problem....will keep everyone informed. Bob

Bob,
Our last unwanted tripodometer reset was back on 11/9, the morning we left on a 2600 mile round trip from Philly, Pa to Omaha, NE. The tripodometer has behaved itself since that time. We have only driven the PT about 250 miles since we returned from the Omaha trip and therefore have not given the tripodometer many opportunities to reset on it’s own. I reported the “reset” to my service manager when we got back. He checked the S.T.A.R. system for updates and it indicated that Chrysler’s Engineers were aware of the problem and working on a solution and also noted that replacing the Instrument Cluster does NOT correct the problem. I can attest to the fact about the cluster, ours was replaced back in April and we have had numerous “resets” since then.
Also, we have cloth seats and using a ground strap that drags the ground did NOT help eliminate the static shocks when exiting the PT during the cold, dry months.
