Don, I think Oregon also has a law against pumping your own gas. Gary can tell us when he cruises by.

You are correct Jn. Oregon does have a law against pumping your own gas. Freaked me out the first time that an attendant came rushing out telling me I couldn't pump my gas. Of course my locking gas cap messed up his mind since he couldn't get my gas cap off.

I could really get into going back to the "good ole days" where "service stations" rather than "gas stations" checked your oil, checked your tire pressure, filled up you gas, cleaned your windshield, vacuumed out your car and gave you a glass or steak knife for filling up at their station. No self service was available nor was it needed. Gasoline was 19.9 to 23.9 cents per gallon in Texas with that level of service in 1965.

A few of the gas stations here in Oregon will give "full service" & most will clean the windshield. I've kinda got used to having someone pump the gas, but don't mind doing it myself when traveling out of state...although it pains me to pay as much or more & get no service at all.

My grandad had a "service" station back in the '30s and he had a black fella named "Dude" working the station one day when the undertaker came with his herse. Now Dude did not like servicing the herse so he was real reluctant but went out to do his job. When he was done the undertaker told Dude to tidy up the inside too because he was on the way to a funeral and wnated the herse looking good. As Dude was cleaning the driver's area some one in the casket started kicking and yelling "Let me out of here!"
Grandad said Dude turned as white as a sheet and ran five blocks before he looked back! [)]
