The GT IS different than the 180 Hp engine. The GT has a MUCH stronger bottom end than the 180 Hp Turbo lite. The Turbo Lite is a stock PT engine with a turbo slapped on. Trying to twist more power out of it will result in a blown engine. The stock PT engine is just not strong enough to take much modding. Most of the people who are making big power have redone the whole engine.
This flies in the face of everything I have seen, read or heard. What is the source of this information?
I have to agree with MichaelDay on this, I've never heard anything that supports this claim, and to the contrary tthrift, parts manager at a DCX dealership, checked every part number he could think of for the Lite & GT - everything is the same.

To address quicksilverdon's original question: even if you could, once you put that 180HP PCM into the thing you'd want it out ASAP. Trust me on this - I put S1 in my Lite and would never look back! To quote Jeff Goldblum in Jurrasic Park: You spent so much time thinking about whether or not you could, you didn't stop to think whether or not you should

Just to make sure, I did a quick search. The average is 20 cents more per gallon. That's almost 10% more. I'd say drive it like it's yours and put in regular. It will learn.
I sometimes wonder if before people buy a vehicle they check to see what grade gasoline it uses. If you don't want to use the more expensive gas that is recommended then don't buy the vehicle. In fact, if you average 13 gallons every fill up that would be an extra $2.60 a fill up. Even if you fill up twice a week that's a whopping $20.80 extra a month. [:0] If a person can't afford that how the heck did that person afford the GT! [:I] Bottom line is the GT was purchased because of the extra power and the extra power is totally available through the use of premium gasoline. If you can't afford the correct gasoline then sell the GT and buy a turbo lite or better yet buy a Toyota Corolla. It's a cheaper car and uses cheap gasoline. I'm not knocking the Toyota. My wife's could kick my '01 PT's butt.

The GT and the turbo lite have the exact same engine. If they weren't the same Mike would have blown up his turbo lite engine instead of kicking people's butts at the track. [?]

That is bunk...the two engine are the same....the 220HP is not a SPECIAL this and that. It shares the same stuff as the 180 lite...Alos premium a few cents more....Where do you live? Here in Louisville premium is about 20 to 30 cents more per gallon than regular.

I'd take the GT over a turbo lite any day. There are other goodies on the Gt that the lite doesn't have. Better suspention, better brakes, and more but, am drawing a blank at the moment. 35 to 40 more horses too.

All (most all?) the equipment on the GT HO is available as options on the Turbo Lite. For racers, the Lite with Stage1 may be the way to go. No heavy sunroof, for instance. For going full boat with lots of options on the Lite, it may be more cost effective to get the GT HO.

To each his own..... I went with the Turbo Lite option, and then added Stage 1 and a few chrome goodies, picked up some 17" GT wheels and I am loving it. Yeah, I did not get the 4 wheel disc or traction control, but I did add Eibach springs and sway bars and tokico shocks. I also upgraded the stereo, and added a few other fun mods. I am still well under the price of the GT, have more horses, and better handling. Heck, if I take off the Touring badge you would be hard pressed to notice the difference.

Buy what you like, or buy what you can and make it how you like it!

Mike

My Lite is the Platinum Series Limited Edition, so it's gots lots of bells and whistles (not to mention chrome, two tone leather plus suede inserts, moonroof, power everything, yadda yadda yadda). With Stage 1 and street tires I was the fastest non-boost contoller equipped PT out of the group of us running at Cali Speedway recently. With drag radials I was even faster. All the other PTs were Stage 1 equipped HO GTs. Go figure.

OK, STOP THE PICTURE! I'll bet you once and for all my GT, yada, yada, yada below can beat ANY PT Cruiser in the WORLD, some assembly required, at the next ONTARIO, CA drag races (probably in jan '05).

I'll put my money where my mouth is and bet you....$0.75. This is in the WORLD folks, jump in... the PTGT/HO will be discontinued in '06. [8)][8)][8)][|)][8)]

BOB S. looked at this last year. the motor is the same as the GT, the tranny is NOT! that is why you can't switch modules. You can do a S1 on a turbo lite & get the same HP as a stock GT. If you add S1 to a GT, you get more power than a turbo lite w/ a better tranny & also a choice of tranny... manual or autostick.
The weakest link on the lte is the tranny. it is the same as the N/A pt's. but they are still good to about 300hp.

Adding Stage 1 to either a Turbo Lite or the HO GT nets the same result - 235-240HP. Stage 1 effectively levels the playing field.

The only difference in the auto tranny between the Lite and HO GT is that the Lite does not come with the Autostick feature. brngrhd is a DCX Tranny Tech and claims them to be the same unit other than the Autostick programming.

They can actually handle more than 300HP, but 300ft-lbs of torque will kill them. With the big torque numbers we can easily make, it's no wonder people who are adding electronic boost controllers, aftermarket WGAs, or management systems like the Psi-Fi PowerPaq, etc are killing those trannies. We'll make 300ft-lbs long before we'll make 300HP, and rather easily too.
