Just ordered the Crane wires from R&S $45 shipped. Maggie said that i got 1 of the last 2 sets they will have for that price.

Screaming Deamon: MX-5 sais that it isnt worth it the Stock one provides all the spark you need.

I havent hit the archives yet... whats the best gap for the N/A?

I have heard anywhere from .042.-052. .042 seems a little tight to me, I set mine at .049, I have a '02 NA, and haven't had any problems with that seetting. I also replaced wites with Mopar P4876511 Cables. They are the (High Output) special wires. Can't remember the correct term.[xx(]

Hooligan, I don't think you'd see a huge improvement in the NA by dropping plug gap. I believe (and someone will quickly correct me if I'm wrong) that the turbo cars came with the same plugs as the NA cars, and at the same gap. The nature of the turbo engine (extra heat and, well, boost!) should neccessitate a different plug, but DCX didn't spec different plugs. The turbo really likes the smaller gap and the upgraded wires. I don't recall reading a report from anyone with a turbo who didn't notice an improvement with this change.

As for upgrading wires on the NA, I would think you might a bit of an improvement there as the Cranes and Magnecors are just far, far better than the stock units.

[:I]I have a question for ya'll, have you tried this combination? According to this site:

http://www.cruisermotorsports.com/Co...PlugWires.html

With the Crane Firewire wires, and the Screamin Demon Coil set, you should make the gap wider, not narrower, to allow for more spark for a better burn. I've found this combo for $59.95 at:

http://www.howellautomotive.com/Howe...roducts_id=192

Any comments? Is this a safe and desirable combo for a pretty much stock 2003 Ltd Ed automatic? They claim better performance, and better mpg as well. I'm tempted[8)]

my opinion is not to gap up. GM had specs up to .080 on some cars. A year or 2 later, they issued a TSB telling techs to gap them back down. A coil can only supply so much, and a tighter gap produces a fatter, hotter spark. Ever watch motorcycle mania when he's got a welder tip pulling away from the bench? Engineers with more smarts than me have run tests and found that .040-.050 is good for most N/A applications, providing the rest of the ignition system can handle it, and a bit tighter for pressurized applications. Anything bigger will stress the ignition system and computer drivers.

Hey SuGamer, I picked .042 because people were telling me either .045 or .040. Thought I'd split the difference and give .042 a shot! No joke, that's how I arrived at the setting! It's been working great for me, but as you can see from this thread alone .040 to .045 seems to work just fine. I have not tried regapping at the track to see if it makes any difference. I'd say stick with what works for you.

GR8FLPT - Stock gap is .050 but with the added boost of Stage 1 things seem to work better with a tighter gap. It does seem that dropping the gap can help even without Stage 1 on a Turbo, and if I remember correctly DCX has even altered spec to a lower gap starting with the '05 models. This may apply to Turbo engines only, not sure, so please don't quote me on this!
You figure they would mention that in the S1 instructions...

so... have we settled on the hot setup yet?

type of plug?
amount of gap?
wires?
with or without new coil?

I'm mentally going broke trying to figure all this performance mod stuff in my head... [:0]

I guess I can do the cheapest thing 1st & gap the stock plugs... only if it wasn't -10 outside today...

This is what I'm running, It may not be the "hottest" set-up, but it has worked & performed great for me. [8D]
Weather here has gotten ugly lately, down to Minus 25 ( Wind Chills to Minus 40) PTurbed doesn't see much outside activity at these temps, But I've been amazed & pleasantly suprised at how well and streetable Stage I & this set-up has been in this kind of weather. [8)]

thanks PTurbed, thats what I'm looking for. Did the NGK's need a special plug socket to install? & was that the 8 or 8.5 mm wires you installed?

BTW, it's not much warmer "down" here. -10 today w/ -27 windchill last report...
