If Cal Cruzer is right and it's the axle or CV joint, don't think you should take it on yourself. I think the axle is press fitted to the bearings...not sure about the joint. Do you know a place that will get your PT up in the air so the wheels can spin at speed? Most places will give you a free check hoping to get your money to fix the problem. At least you can hopefully pinpoint the noise.

If you are going stock, just replace the entire axle/cv joint assembly as a whole. They usually don't rebuild them anymore.
