Silencer Removal

2003 GT: I removed my white silencer and switched to a K&N drop-in filter, but I am still not getting quite as much Turbo sound as I would like. Can one remove the big black silencer in the air box without compromising cold air flow? Does removing it damage it, i.e. if I don't like the result I may wish to re-install it.

If you mean the tube to the right into wheelwell, yes it compromises cold air flow. I also tried to take mine out - it seems to clip in somehow, and I couldn't figure out how to free it. Some have replaced it with a larger tube.
You can get an aftermarket intake...

Thanx for your reply. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that there is a silencer that protrudes into the airbox from that tube . IF I remember correctly there is a way to remove the silencer, w/o removing the tube to the wheelwell, BUT one might have to plug some holes in the tube.... maybe I dreamed it all, who knows.

Mine's not a turbo (have an '05 turbo on order) so your intake could be different, but I have mine memorized....
Aftermarket intakes (at least on N/As) give good roar & eliminate throttle lag. [?]

I did my air box soon after I got mine, here's what I did with pics:

I modified the tube inside the box by cutting it at a slant to open it up for a better flow. I noticed quite a differnce myself.

Dang! I'm impressed, not only with the work, but with the documentation you provided. If I ever need a heart bypass, I might give you a call.

I made a new airbox to turbo pipe for myself. I would also suggest that there are a couple guys on the various boards who make VERY nice pipes that you can buy. I don't think I should mention them as I don't want to appear bias but if you want to look into it email me and I will provide you with contact info.

The stock pipe is VERY restrictive because the silence in it chokes down very small. I also installed and Airaid intake so when I get into the boost my PT really has a jet engine turbo whine at higher RPM's. I LOVE IT!
