My check light came on suddenly yesterday and wanted to know what the code might mean and is it something I can take care. I have a '03 Turbo with an autostick, has 30,000 on the odometer. The code that comes up is: p 0442. I know it has to do with the evaporative system and it indicates a small leak. Any ideas and or suggestions. Thanks! Mike

unless you have the proper info and tools, I'd suggest taking it to someone knows what to do. In this case, pressurizing the system to check for leaks is delicate. More than 3-5 PSI will damage sensors.

99% of everyone has said it has to do with probably the gas cap. It is a minor problem and pressurizing the system would not be the brightest thing. I have a factory one coming tomorrow since I had replaced the locking cap a few weeks ago. We'll see what happens. Mike

P0442
When monitored: Immediately after a cold start, with battery/ambient temperature between 40F and 90F, and coolant temp within 10F of battery/ambient, and fuel level between 15% and 85%. Set condition: If there is a leak larger than .040" and smaller than .080" in the EVAP system. Possible causes: actual leak in the EVAP system, intermittent leak detection pump monitor failure, loose gas cap.

Wanted to let you know that I picked up my factory gas cap and put it on and started the engine and NO check light. It is strange that something so benign could be a problem. Thanks for all the help, Mike

Cap was $11.83, pretty cheap to solve a problem. I know dealers are usually very high on parts. I was quite surprise at the price. Mike
