I will post a picture of mine from my 03 GT/DC2 5spd. I have the intake removed already since I am upgrading, in my opinion, to the composite intake. I am actually curious as to what it is. I had read about the apparently smaller throttle body on the manual cars, but never bothered to actually see if it is true. I will go out and get it from the garage shortly. It's -16 outside so I am not motivated at this instant!

ROLMAO....
Sometime I think some members just do things out of stubbornness?
I suppose some have never read Chrysler sales brochures either?

The manual throttle body because of the compensator attached to the throttle plate total flow rate is less than that of the throttle body without it. The automatics as far as normally should have been assigned to the engines during the production run should be a throttle body not having the compensator attached to the throttle plate.

Manual throttle body air flow compensator attached to the throttle plate

As with many PT Cruiser production line changes not all manual transmission equipped PT Cruisers had these special Throttle bodys.

OK, enlighten me. Is the black semicircle thing in the photo the compensator? What exactly does it do? I don't know much about throttle design.

During shifting it helps to increase the air flow speed slightly to smooth out the air velocity and somewhat maintaining the AFR range which changes when you let off the throttle to shift and than reapply the throttle. You don't do that with an automatic so the compensator is not needed. The compensator in other words helps increase the creature comfort driving a PT cruiser.

During the first couple years Chrysler sent out questionnaires to random owners to get an idea of complaints, compliments or improvement suggestions. Drivability was one thing that seems to be mentioned the most needing improvements.

Wow, for once you actually posted some good info instead of passing off your opinion as fact!

In your picture above, the inlet appears to have been ported, probably making the effect of the so-called "compensator" negligible and simply an obstruction at this point.

One of my 03 GT/DC2 5spd does, in fact, have that "compensator". I wonder if the other two have them also.

The pictures below show mine. It is indeed 52mm on the output, probably as the number stamped into the throttle blade indicates. I was surprised that the inlet actually necks down to approx. 46.5mm just before the throttle blade. I wonder if the automatics also neck down to this degree too. My parts car is an 03 GT automatic so I guess I will go out and give it a measure tomorrow.

As it is on most forum if I post something that is not known group authored and perpetuated information readily found internet presumed empirical information it must only be my opinion because I do not present my research data! Comments generally negative in nature, not saying yours was, directed about my responses I post without me saying either IMO or IMHO also tells me who really know things and who is a internet warrior!

The picture was a stock TB rebuilt and some "paza" fun machining to make it look Hyper performance in the style of most "ricer" parts.

My other TB with the compensator has been sitting on the outside in the parts to go pyle and looked waaaaay worse than yours pictured. I just really need to make a garbage run!

BTW Good pictures posted for this thread.

I think only the NA stick cars have 46mm.

so we have two different 5 speed 03 GT's, with two different throttle bodies.

WHY?
  • was FK5's upgraded before he bought the car?
  • did the canadian market one come with a smaller TB?
  • was chrysler just using whatever was on hand and didn't have any lawn mower TB's left while assembling FK5's car?
  • did the dream cruiser get the smaller TB so it was "dreamier" and easier to drive?

I was unaware of the 2 different tb's until I saw this thread. I recently got a plastic intake from a 06 gt auto and guy left tb on so I just used it. I cleaned it and replaced the tb to intake gasket but I didn't switch over the tps from my stock tb.. it seems to be fine but earlier in this thread someone said to switch over the sensors? What's that about? All there is are the tps and idle control right?
