Default Intercooler Fan Mod

Thinking about installing second fan behind the intercooler.
These can be found on ebay for like 40 bucks.

Any thoughts?

And any idea where I can tap into for power?
Power should be ON only when the engine is on.
Havent tried looking myself, but someone with the Manuals would save me a lot of time...Thanks!
Dalite what do you think?

It sound like a good idea.

The GN came with them from the factory and they were 13 sec cars, 10 if modified.

Have you seen the NOS intercooler system?

It is a spray bar placed in front of the intercooler and when you floor the car it sprays to the intercooler fins cooling to up to 40 Degrees the air. No NOS is actualy going to the car.

Saw one installed on a Honda.. This car was tricked to the max.. He told me the fan had a temperature sensor to go on at some given value. Just some more food for thought.. It did however he said help in many of the heat problems for this particular car!

Ian, saw the NOS I/C sysytem...very COOL! (pun intended!).
They also have a CO2 one on ebay, the seller will custom make one for your car $80.
Hmm..May be interested in that type of system if I had a Stage III installed!!!!!
Overkill for my daily driver..COOL nonetheless!

I will look into it. My first guess would be in tandem with the radiator fan relay in the power distribution panel behind the air box. Using the sense connection there, in tandem with an add-on Bosh-type relay, you would have fan action that is in synch with the engine temp and on when the engine is running at correct temp. That logic would eliminate a lot od design worries.

What is the CFM of the fan on eBay? It will have to pull a lot of air thru the intercooler to be able to offer more efficiency than the ram air due to motion.

I looked at the STI yesterday (WRX) and they had what looked like a 2 stream windshield washer (definately not a spray bar) inside the hood scoop to spray water on the intercooler. I asked the salesman about where it was fed from, and then the manager. The manager confirmed my concern. It is fed from a separate tank (located in the trunk area) and the recomendation is for distilled water only. Sulphur and other minerals can cause the cooling fins to go away..

($40 for the thermostat)
And anyways, would one want the fan to run constantly???

Thanks Dalite..
That would be great, but would one want to have independent control?
Please also find a 12VDC constant for me if you can...THANKS!!!
The fan moves 560CF, but anything would help @ idle & not moving!!
Think its enough?? I would only know by feeling it.

The link to the fan i was looking at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=24 18281475
A ton of others, more expensive:
http://cgi6.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...=wesmars hall

There was a guy over at SRT forums that rerouted his washer jets:
http://www.srtforums.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5180
Washers are too important to be moved, a second stand alone system would be desirable.
Possibly from the junkyard. Could washer fluid be used?
Someone also mentioned Water + Alcohol mixture.

It is an EXCELLENT idea. Heat soak (while waiting for a drag or dyno run) is a real problem. I recommend tham for our Porsche 911 Turbos, and the 2.4 Turbos need them even more because they don't have the engine cooling fan (911s are air coled...) pulling air through the intercooler.

I saw somewere a universal sprayer kit for intercoolers, I will check my "sport compact car, Turbo" magazines.

At the track, I take a Spray bottle and spray it to the intercooler while waiting for the next pass. It improved .15 from my previous times. I saw the WRX guys doing it to their cars so I stole the idea. They now buy Ice bags and place them on top of their intercoolers while they wait. I think I will pass with this idea... Kind of hard to get the Ice to the I/C.

OK, Here are a few things I have found in the wiring section of the service manual.

First, the radiator fan is under control of the PCM. Non-Turbo PTs have both a low-speed and high speed relay in the power distribution center. However, the GT is turned on by a signal from the PCM. It is a 20 gauge wire, so you would only be able to use that as a sense wire to trigger a relay for the inter-cooler fan.

That isn't a problem using a Bosh-Type relay. They come with fog light kits, horn kits, any item that you want to use smaller current to turn on a large current draw.

In this case, teeing into the PCM to Radiator fan wire (DB/DG [dark Blue/ Dark Green] located in connector C3 at the PCM I think number 6 in the connector) and feeding the #85 (switch input; one side of the relay's coil). Relay #86 goes to ground. The Ground wire from the add-on fan should also go to ground; either to the negative post of the battery (best) or to a good connection to chassis. Relay #30 goes to battery with 12 to 10 Gauge (estimate here; large enough to pull some current). Relay #87 goes to the positive wire to the add-on fan (use 12 to 10 gauge wire here also, or match the gauge of the wire on the fan).

This setup puts entire control under the PCM. It makes sure that the engine is up to temperature (that shouldn't be a major consideration) and that the fan doesn't turn constantly or need operator control). The dinner bell is ringing, so this is going out now. More later, and II will look at the eBay link when I get back to the keyboard.
