Found this thread (link below) which should stop some of the bantering and answer the question about exhaust design on turbo cars.
Howdy, This thread was brought to my attention by a friend of mine in hopes of shedding some light on the issue of exhaust size selection for turbocharged vehicles. Most of the facts have been covered already. FWIW I'm an turbocharger development engineer for Garrett Engine Boosting Systems. http://www.horsepower411.com/forum/s... threadid=109 Hope this helps. Very very interesting......he went off into Engineer-babble for a while, but I got the basic premise.Goes contrary to what I had believed, but he makes sense, in his own Flow-Dynamics-Geek sorta way.

WOW!! What a well written article!!!
Correct me if I'm wrong: Forget "scavenging" altogeather. Open up the exhaust to "0" backpressure! It sounds like he just substantiated the claims of the BTG folks and the claims of the new Exhaust Depot 3" Super System!!! Greater differences in pressure(and velocity) across the turbo compound the efficiency of the turbo. 20 HP is not an unreal expectation. If his explaination is correct, this type of wide open free flow exhaust should possibly give even more power to a Stage I because of it's higher boost pressure(15 psi from 10psi stock). Also the "Super System would far and away be the choice to get max HP with the Stage II's larger turbo !!! BRING ON THE BIG PIPES!! |

Thank you Steve for hunting down such a great (and timely)article!!
This could be very important information for people looking at Stage I and beyond upgrades. |

Damn! Finally someone who can explain this right. Hopefully, this will put an end to the discussions about needing backpressure and correct pipe size and whatnot. I think this should be made a sticky. BTW, thanks for finding the link.

Who can make this one a sticky as suggested above? I am sure that this topic will be broached again once this thread sinks into the sunset.

Figured out why I couldn't see the link before; Lord of Lords Microsoft built into their web browsers certain scripts visible to only Windows users. I was logging on here with my Mac and could not see it before. So I give a finger to the powers that be and a thumbs up to Steve03GT for posting a great thread.
