When I get the kit and we finalize where we will do the install I'll let you know macster.

I am in SE Ga, and would be willing to install or take part in an installation party.
R_K_GT has an excellent host, as it has the stock exhaust, no boost controller and close to stock air intake. The numbers on the SRT forum indicate that the Stage I will provide the best HP gain when installed on a stock host. The more the mods, the less the performance gains. One of the members there netted 7HP gain with the Stage I due to the heavy mods he had going into the upgrade. Since it is speed density rather than mass flow, the curves are in the PCM, based on stock configuration. It is a static operation that allows the PCM to give the performance increase, based on the look-up tables from an otherwise stock setup. The O2 sensors report data on both fuel ratio and the effectiveness of the CAT. I believe they are independent of the look-up mapping, as Kirby indicates. The only obstacle to CARB approval that I can envision is the feature that is touted as giving a more throaty tone on deceleration.. I read this as keeping a sloppy rich mixture available at RPM levels where the turbo remains up to spool speed and ready to produce boost. If not for the rich mixture, there may be a chance that sudden accel after decel would start with a less than optimal ratio, and go downhill from there due to the small volume and quick spooling capabilities of the stock turbo. It may also be an attempt to overcome the ASD routines that would try to shut down the fuel rail on what the PCM perceives to be a fault situation (much like the stutter at 4500 to 5000 RPM when a boost controller is keeping the PCM from lowering the boost to the level it can strictly enforce all the parameters. This is just a guess; no hard facts here. The speed density setup depends on PCM calibration and look-up tables to map the manifold pressure data to meet the demands on the fuel system. When there are other mods, the look-up table(s) are no longer a correct map for controlling the fuel delivery. Speed density does not perform well on highly modified engines, due to the loss of vacuum upon any throttle opening. This is a summary from an excellent thread located here: http://www.yarchive.net/car/mass_air_flow.html The discussion there may give a hint as to why the Stage I does a more efficient job on non-modified hosts, and as the level of modifications to the systems the upgraded PCM attempts to control rise, the performance gains realized by the upgrade are lessened. Remember, it does provide the equivalent of an EBC; one that is matched for the system, so trading your boost controller for more HP and better turbo management may not be such a bad thing. The up side of this is the safety factor of using a system that is matched for the intended host in a stock configuration. It is apparently designed to give the maximun HP possible without sacrificing the longevity of the host engine and drivetrain. Having said that, I still am at a loss of words to explain the warranty statment that accompanies the Stage I upgrade. |

The reference to loss of vacuum in the above linked artilce would refer more to loss of vacuum due to cam changes and cams that have a lot of overlap. There should be no significant loss of vacuum by just putting a new exhaust or air intake on the car. I believe that that article was discussing NA engines more than compressor engines.

Re"(I don't want to be party to anyone losing a liscense though.)" please explain. Unless I missed something, the proposed gathering appears to be just a bunch of guys getting together to put in the upgrade. I don't see where a license issue comes into play. Did I miss something? macster

I think he's talking about drinking and driving macster. I don't think he's talking about the install.

Duhhhh! I don't drink unless I'm at home and then its only a glass of wine. I've seen too many accidents while I was growing up in Arlington, Va. Anyway I am looking forward to this, it should be a lot of fun. macster

Hey I live in SoCal, and would like to come down and see all this too. When are you going to do all this? I live in the high desert and have thought about stage 1 for a while, but it would be great to see what a difference it makes on someone elses car before I go for it.
Keep me up to date on this.

Well as soon as R K GT gets the unit we can put together an install day. This should be fun.
