when the button is engaged ( traction control is off ) does it let the computer know to use maxium power settings for maximum performance ( ie timing retarded , fuel ratio ect...)

Trac control has to do with the brake being applied when one wheel starts to spin/slip. As far as I know it has nothing to do with timing, fuel, etc.

This is a question I've had two, cause with the traction control on my car will break loose easer in first gear then with it off, but when its off my car feels faster top end, maybe its just me but I know for a fact my car will break loose in first with the TC ON, witch kind of defeats the purpose......

Don't do burnouts with the TC on or you can break an axle. Seen it done.

My 02 lights up 'TRAC OFF' in almost plain English. Which discriminates against illiterates, thus can't be used anymore.

And now I know. I'm not a fan of traction control. Besides, I read that if you have heavy foot with the turbo (and I do), the stomping on the gas with the TC on could do some damage. Guess I'll keep it off and try and figure out how to block the orange glow from the instrument pane. Maybe a little electrical tape.

Damage can come when attempting a serious (as in drag strip) launch, tach-to-4-grand-and-dump-the-clutch kinda launches with traction control on can get really unpleasant, more so if you have tweaked the engine. The first time you gotta deal with starting in the snow, you may change your mind about TRAC. Sure, it ain't a limited slip differential, and surely ain't 4wd, but it helps.
