Most, if not all, GM and Ford factory "blown" engines use the Mass Air Flow system instead of the Speed Density used by Chrysler, which got me to wondering, what other factory blown vehicles use, or have used, speed density other than the SRT4 and GT Cruiser? Did the old Shelby turbo (Omnis?)use speed density? I'm not a Chrysler guy and don't know the history of their blown cars. Dalite's statement about the look-up tables in another post made me question if a blown engine shouldn't have MAF rather than SD due to the large range of CFM to be measured. The GTP Grand Prixs, Ford SVT Mustangs, and Ford Lightings all use MAF's even though they're more expensive than speed density. Is it possible the good ole boys at D-C went the least expensive route, rather than use the better MAF system to save a few bucks?
Nawww, they wouldn't do that -- N T!!! |

I'm pretty sure my 86 Charger Shelby had the Speed Density, as did my 88 Mustang GT. I may be wrong on the years but if I remember right the 89's came with Mass Air. With the mustang, the speed density ran a little richer and adjusted well to things like intakes, headers, etc. Actually better than MAF (according to Muscle Mustangs & FF Magazine) only when adding a supercharger was a conversion needed. (or a new chip installed)
From the articles I've been reading the last few minutes, both work well, both have benefits, and on a turbo motor, a Speed Density system is quite good. Don

Chrysler has never used a MAF system.Always Speed Density.I know a lot of people would change the MAP Sensor which was attached to the computer back in the day of the Shelby 2.2/2.5 to a 3-Bar Map Sensor. MAF systems are easier to mod in my opinion because most of the interfaces with the computer can be worked around.Speed Density is good for a stock application, but when you start turning wrenches and adding parts, I believe that a MAF wins hands down for ease of tuning, etc.

There have been some attempts to program around the SD FI systems on mustangs with limited success. SD systems seem to be the most flexible or easiest to produce in aftermarket though. The Edelbrock aftermarket FI is SD. It needs to be built from the ground up as a programable system though. Trying to reprogram a factory (at least on mustangs) hasn't seemed to work.
