Which mounts did you buy? Spoke to guy at Modern Performance today and he told me the Prothanes will not work on factory PT mounts, only on SRT-4. I was under the impression that the PT and SRT-4 shared the same mounts???

Everyone told me the stock mounts are the same for both of them. I picked up the mounts from NAPA for the PT Cruiser. I then ordered the Prothane inserts. You have to trim the "webbing" between the pieces of prothane, top and bottom on one insert, and just the top on the other so the rubber slides in between them. I got mine to slide in no problem. So, they will work if you get rid of the webbing.

You will see what I mean if you buy them. They work.

Do the stock mounts just SUCK or what? The dealer says I need new ones for a total of $440....... which aftermarket are the best? How much addl should it cost to have em put in? I only have 44k miles on 05 GT convertible.

I added red Prothane inserts to my factory mounts and they work great. Also supposed to increase lifespan of mounts. You will still need to replace your factory mounts (assuming they are broken), then the inserts just slide in before you bolt them up. Inserts are $23.99. Here is link:

Yup thats what I had to do. Had to get two new mounts, then bought the prothane inserts, and trimmed the excess prothane off, and they slid into the mount bushings. They basically take up the openings that the stock mounts have, where the rubber doesnt attach to the metal (why its designed that way is beyond me, its complete rubbish), and they keep the rubber from over flexing and eventually tearing.

Mine have been on there for a while now, good so far.

Hey all.
I see that this is an old thread, but my wife's PT's mounts are wearing out causing the symptomatic cabin rattle.
We took it to a mechanic and they quoted 1300 dollars to repair it, since they have to pull the engine to get to the lower mounts and that equals almost 10 hours of work.
Is it accurate that you need to pull the engine to do this? Why couldn't you just jack the engine up? Should I get a second opinion?

You need the torque struts replaced and not the engine mounts so you don't need the engine pulled. I have never heard of the engine mounts needing to be replaced on these cars. The torque struts are very flimsy on the PT. There is an upper and a lower torque strut. I can change both in 1-1.5 hours.

Yea, my buddy (technician for ford) said the same thing to me when I asked him how to do it. The manual tells them at the dealerships that you have to remove the motor. There is one other mount where the motor bolts to the transmission or the frame, cant remember, but the upper and lower mounts are both on the passenger side, ones right on the top when you open the hood, and the other is on the bottom, inside the frame rail. I switched both of mine out in about an hour.

I also got the prothane inserts. They keep the rubber webbing from twisting too far from the torque, which is why the original mounts wear out. Best $24.00 i ever invested.

Hey all ..i,m back..Having replace all engine mounts alongside my team wrenchman,we did not have to remove the engine to replace the mounts, but i see that the touque mounts or struts are the weak spot.they are the upper and lower right mounts not the other two mounts.I went with deyemene mounts and should never break the inserts.
If you are replacing the engine mounts themselves make very sure you measure there exact location and make very sure your alignment is perfectly on the money.
