PianT, The subject of weather a turbo timer is necessary,is up for debate. There is no doubt that over time if a turbocharged engine is shutdown with the turbocharger extremely hot that turbocharger bearing damage can result. (it could be considered more of a convienience I suppose rather than having to wait & time the shutdown) Many people on this forum have stated that with the emergance of the popularity of synthetic Oil that a turbo timer is not necessary. Dino oil will "coke up" in the turbocharger bearings much quicker than synthetic oil will. I want my turbocharger to last the length of time that I own my vehicle. I see a TT as a way to avoid an issue over time. As far as warranty goes, I have been to my dealer any # of times and there is no issue at my dealer about this. After all I'm saving them a possible extended warranty repair down the road. Whats not to like ??

Thanks for the reply Gear Head. I have been letting the car idle after running on the highway for this reason. I suppose the timer would clear up any question as to how long to let it idle (I know this depends on how hot it has been running)and add convenience for sure, sick of hearing "are you gonna shut that thing off?"

Do you think a slow "putt" from the offramp to the driveway will suffice to cool it down?

PianT,
On my old '86 Shelby Turbo, I used to "putt" the last while to my house to cool the oil and do the same on my GT. I had almost 200,000km. on that car with no issues and running a Turbo2 kit (14psi) without an intercooler.
As long as you keep the revs down for the last while you should be fine.

Don

I put the purple wire, as well as the two gound wires under the screw holding the fuse box to the car. They are all on the same screw. Is there a better place to put my connection?

Just use synth. I have personally put over 220K miles on volvo 740 turbocharger and 180K miles on a Saab turbocharger with synth. The Volvo only went about 40K miles on dino before it ground up the bearings. I swithed (swithed? what the heck is that, I meant switched!) to synth for the follow 220K. Yes the car had 260+ on it when I got rid of it. Those things will run forever if you take care of them.

Or better yet, spend $30 at Wal-Mart for a set of Rhino Ramps and do the changes yourself! The filter and drain plug are in an easy to get to location which makes doing it yourself a snap.

$19 for 5 qts. of Mobil-1 + $10 for K&N HP-2009 oil filter = really cheap engine insurance and the satisfaction of a job well done, not to mention it'll be done to your exact specifications (if you want it done right . . .). Took me maybe 20 minutes to do.

My PT is the first car I've ever owned where I look forward to doing regular maintenance! It's the first time I've turned wrenches since I worked changing tires / oil / inspections in the late 80's LOL. Should I see a Dr. now? [8D]

The Mrs. didn't know how right she was when she said, "Sounds like this will be a high maintenance car." when I first bought my PT. Now I've got her wrenching too (she helped me with BOV install)! [?]

[ummm, oh yeah, on topic]
I don't know how accurate I am but I'm my own turbo timer. I live a few miles from the highway so I just keep it under 40MPH then let it idle in the driveway for a minute ( a timed 60 seconds) before I shut it down.

I also believe in the do it yourself oil change, but for 20 CND (might be less if I supply the oil) my TRUSTED mechanic will have it done in a quarter hour with no appointment needed, plus I get a receipt in case of an issue at the dealer.

Sorry to go off topic, promise this is it for me on this.

As for the turbo timer I'll probably get one for convenience.

Yeah, I ALWAYS do my own oil. It gives me a chance to get under there every couple months and check for leaks, loose items etc.

Hey Cal Cruzer,

Does your front sway bar look like a piece of rusted crap?

Everything under my PT looks fine except for the sway bar. Looks like they recycled it from a demolition sight. It sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the undercarriage.
