Valve job for GT Cruiser?

Chief Complaint: runs rough at idle. Secondary issue: engine whistles at times when at operating temp.

I brought it to the dealer. Error code lead them to do a leak down test. They found cylinder #3 has 20% loss. Others were less than 7%. They want $1600to do a valve job.

Have you seen this before? What's your opinon? Do you know of resources to aid me in the repair? I used to be a mechanic so I can do it but I got to get the timing right, etc.

Instead of "thinking" that it costs too much, here's a site that gives you the estimates of auto repair costs and maybe you can get a better, more accurate idea of costs.

Could a timing belt act that way? Wouldn't a timing belt that slipped cause the motor to run bad all of the time?
Mine is rough at idle.

I am thinking to not DIY. Its a little tough with just one vehicle. I'll ask two of my trusted mechanics and get a quote.
