Default To those speed freaks...

not concerned with the warrenty. Have any of you thought about removing the balance shafts? I thought I read somewhere's they are really HP robbers. Or maybe it was they just free up the HP already there?[:I]

I see a good number of the guys over on srt4forums have taken them off. Should be good for about 10hp give or take. I have taken them out of my talon, you dont really feel THAT much more vibrations inside.

Billster, As far as i know there are two shafts that spin counter clockwise? to the crankshaft to balance out the vibrations on a 4 banger. I believe they run through the oil pan and are chain driven. Some racers remove these to free up more HP. I think it causes a bit more vibration but as stated above maybe not to much more. Hopefully some one with more exprience can better explain. Nice GT BTW...[?]

The 2.4-liter engine operates very smoothly because of a system of counter-rotating balance shafts which counteract second-order unbalance, the predominant reason for four-cylinder engine vibration.

The two counter-rotating, eccentric balance shafts, interconnected by gears, are driven by a short chain from the crankshaft. They turn at two times engine speed to offset the reciprocating mass of the pistons and connecting rods and to achieve the desired balancing effect. The balance shafts are enclosed in an aluminum housing mounted beneath the crankshaft in the oil pan. The housing is bolted to the bottom of the main bearing webs of the bedplate and rest in the oil supply. When the engine is running, the balance shafts pump oil out of the housing to minimize parasitic drag which could occur if the shafts spun in the oil.

As far as i know i am the only PT without the BS (balance shafts that is). It is hard to give a good gauge on vibration increase because I do not have a stock engine; the idle has a bit of a lope to it due to the Crane #14's.
My observations:
1. The BS assembly weighs about 14 lbs, so you save a little weight
2. It does free up a little power due to less drag on the crank snout
3. It allows you to add ~1 more quart of oil. This is good.
4. If you remove them you should add baffles and gates to the oil pan to control the sloshing of the oil during certain conditions
5. It does add a little bit of engine vibration at idle. Everyone's view on this varies.
6. Once you start moving, that little vibration is non existent.

Ant, I know there aren't a whole bunch of us out there yet, but I'd find it interesting to see how you'd run stacked up against a Staged 1 GT. Have you taken it to the Qtr yet to get Qtr mile ET's and MPH? You gotta at least be running 13's
