Default ...oil blow-by catch can?

..I find several ideas on what hoses to hook up a catch can for bypass oil vapor.....WHAT WORKS????

The oil catch fittings require 3/8 ID hose. You can use silicone hoses, you can use vinyl (integrated braid hose that is qualified for gas/oil). Personally, if you,re not a slave to fashion, 3/8 ID Fuel line is about the best. Only comes in black though (as far as I know), and can be bought at any autoparts store (pep boys, western auto, auto zone etc.) As far as the catch filter itself, although its true that the water vapor condenser filters used for compressors have warnings about synthetic oil, these filters typically operate at MUCH HIGHER pressures. IMHO there really is no issue using the filters at the pressures that were talking here. Even if the filter was completely blocked there is not enough pressure to worry about exploding the catch vessel. I use a Greddy catch can Between the PCV valve and the intale manifold. Because(of the fact that it looks cool) & I bought it before the Idea was hatched to use compressor filters. I do have a compressor filter between the Air Intake tube and the fitting under the IC tube to the throttle body.

So the answer to your question is to use 3/8 ID hose that is qualified to be used with gas/oil whatever the construction you choose. And IMHO unless you want to pay $ 85 - $95 for a Greddy catch can, there are any number and sizes of compressor air line water vapor filters that can be used. Thay can cost from $11.95 to 25.95 for small and medium sizes respectivley. Home Depot carries a larger volume unit for $ 32.95 Hope this helps and as always Thats my $.02 [8D]

According to SAE paper 2003-01-0410, when the turbo is operating in boost, the induction system pressurizes and flow through the PCV valve stops. Why do you need an oil catch?

Don't know why it does, but if you hook one up you'll find out how much blowby there actually is. I have a greddy catch can between the PCV and the intake manifold, and a compressor filter between the air intake and the valve cover. BOTH have acumulated enough oil to be emptied. (Not full mind you, but enough to pour out of the containment vessel). [:I]

I have a homemade catch can on my Eagle Talon TSI. Plenty of people just use a Fram G2 fuel filter, which costs about 3 bucks from any auto parts store.

Has anyone found any oil resdue in the air inlet ever?
I for one never have, so why the consern?

That is the reason that I put a catch can between the air box and the valve cover. I opened my airbox to put in the K&N filter, and there was oil in the bottom of the airbox. Not a lot, but enough to make me clean it out, and put on a compressor air filter canister.

oil in the bottom of the box, so it didn't make it passed the filter.

also isn't the filter oiled!

so this small amount of oil would actually benefit the filter.

Well I look at it this way, it cost $ 9.95 for the compressor air condenser/filter. If you can get peace of mind for $ 9.95 its a pretty good deal. Besides that, I now use an AMX1397 turbo up CAI. The vacum line is BEHIND the filter cone. I just do not want the turbo impeller, the intercooler, the Blow off valve, and the throttlebody not to mention the intake runners subjected to oil and oil vapor that could condense in any or all of those areas. Look at it from that point of view, and $ 9.95 is an small price to pay for virtually eliminating the issue mentioned above. And I do get an oil buildup in the condenser/filter. All I do is drain the canister and I'm done!! Thats my two pennies worth of justification.

I've had a GReddy catch can on my pcv line to the manifold since August 2nd. Last night I emptied a 1/4 cup of synthetic oil out of it. I consider it to be a very good investment. For those who would use a compressor filter while running synthetic oil be sure to read the little warning label that says using the compressor filter with synthetic oil may cause an explosion. I've heard some have just pulled the label off, out of sight, out of mind. If it does happen try and tell the dealer you want it covered under warranty. [xx(]
