Default Should I change to Mobil 1...

at 1500, 3000, or 6000 miles? I've read various "Mobil 1 threads" and there are many different opionions and recommendations. [:I] I figure that most engine parts are "seated and settled in" after the first 1500 miles so I am thinking about changing to Mobil 1 earlier rather than later. Or, I could wait, just to be "on the safe side" and switch to synthetic motor oil at 6000 miles. What do you think? Thanks.

Didn't change to Castrol synthetic until 8,000 miles. That's when I finally talked my wife into the extra expense. Funny thing is the next time she went in for an oil change for her '01 she went to Castrol synthetic, too.[^]

Gary, I went to M1 at 5,000. my independant mechanic told me the engine should break in properly before you introduce synthetic. no regretes, 15,000 now. still change every 3,000

I went to M1 at 1500 miles. I got 2500 on it now and plan to change the oil every 3000 mile after that. Don`t forget, just because its synthetic doesn`t mean that you can keep it in any longer than natual oils. I don`t know of anyone that drives their car to NOT change the oil @ 3000 mile or so.

I heard that if you go to synthetic oil, you can NEVER go back, if you do you could wipe out the bearings.
I went to m1 at 2500 miles and dont have any answers yet.

I've heard that also but "the experts claim" that just isn't so. Anyway, after I switch to M1 I don't plan to go back to regular oil.

It's not a problem to change back and forth. Mobil 1 does not change anything within the engine to make it not run with dino. The only downside would be on a very old engine that was not well maintained using dino oil. If the oil was not changed regularly and seals and gaskets got hard and cracked, synth has a tendency to find it's way past them and onto the driveway because of its superior flow characteristics. Going back to dino oil will generally solve this. Do not read this to say that changing to synth is bad or will hurt the engine, IT IS NOT AND WILL NOT. Again, only on old engines that were not well maintained.

How long are you guys going on the mobil 1 without an oil change? I heard from a guy that works for castrol syntec that you can run 10K miles, change just the filter, then run another 10K before you change the oil. I called mobil one and they said change it as frequently as the manual says.

Mr. Blonde,

I'm changing every 3,000 miles because that is what is required to keep my warranty intact.

If you aren't worried about the warranty, then change the oil filter every 3,000 miles, and get your oil analyzed. When the analysis comes back as "time to change the oil" then do it. You can find out more about oil analysis at www.bobistheoilguy.com which is an excellent site that covers more about oil than I knew existed.

I changed to Mobil 1 at 6500 miles. I'm planning to change the oil and filter every 5000 miles.
