Here's a "dumb" question: What exactly is a BOV? [:I] What does it do and why [u]do I need it</u>??? Is it "easy" to install? [B)]

Gary, the BOV Blow off valve is a valve that relieves intake pressure when on decelleration the boost goes to vacum. That leaves pressure in the intake. The GT uses what it calls a SURGE valve. That is basically a BOV, but uses an internal passage and valve to vent the pressure back into the inlet side of the turbocharger. You do not hear the turbulance that causes in the turbpocharger because of all of the silencers in the intake. Two removables in the air box, and one (Not Removable) in the up piping between the air box and the turbocharger inlet. If you were to change to an aftermarket turbo up intake system, (without a silencer), you would hear the turbulence in the turbocharger upon decelleration. To describe it best I'll quote TurbomanGT " sounds like a handful of change in a blender". Mopar makes a kit that converts the surge valve into a Blow off valve. The blow off valve vents that pressure into the atmosphere rather than redirect it into the turbocharger input side.
You asked if you need it, I think you have to look at what it does and decide if it is important enough to you NOT to vent back into the turbocharger. I have heard the noise that the turbulance causes and it is not pretty. The BOV (any BOV) vents to the atmosphere and creates a pshhhh sound when it does. Some people like it some do not. The general consensus is that the surge valve vents into the turbo intake and fights against the pressure on the output side of the turbocharger. This can cause impeller and/or bearing & shaft issues over time. The first mod that I did on my GT was an Air Raid aftermarket intake. This still used the original up piping (with the silencer)& I could hear the turbulence in the turbocharger. The next mod that I did was to order and install a HKS SSBOV and installation kit. I couldn't stand the noise the turbo would make without the bov (mainly cause it made me feel like i was damaging the turbocharger). The conversion kit is less expensive as the current surge valve is modified to vent into the atmosphere and only requires a modified cover (with vent slots) and some other parts. Listen to the opinions of others as well as mine here and you'll need to decide for yourself if you need it. Just because you can't hear the turbulence in the turbocharger on decelleration doesn't mean that its not there. Alan [} ]![]() |

Not all BOVs are equal. The BOV (that's what it is called, also known as CBV for compressor bypass valve) on my Eagle Talon is redirected back into the intake, and it's REQUIRED. The reason is because the Talon uses a MAF sensor instead of the typical Chrysler MAP sensor, and it is placed at the beginning of the intake system and not further down (say at the UIP). That is, the air is metered at the intake, and the fuel charge is calculated based on that metered air. If it were vented outside of the intake system, it would result in an over-rich condition, to the point of stalling out sometimes, during shifts and on deceleration.

There shouldn't be THAT much oil. If there is, then you have a much more serious problem.

What is known is that it makes a neat noise when you come off the throttle. Which is pretty much enough for me! ![]() I installed mine Sat morning and am happy with the results. Install took me about 2 hours but only because I managed to drop my only 10mm socket down into the engine bay and it landed on a frame crossbeam that took a little MacGuyver action to reclaim it. The dreaded 3rd bolt was absolutely the PITA folks say it is. I don't have jackstands so coming up from below wasn't an option for me. There isn't enough room to fit a standard size ratchet head or even a mini ratchet in there for the last bolt. If you've got a small extension piece (maybe 1.5 to 2 inches) it will give the head enough clearance and won't be too long and have you butting into the engine block. The only thing I had to take out to access all three bolts was my CAI. I was concerned that I wouldn't have enough room to get back in once the added depth of the BoV plate was there but it actually went on a helluva lot easier. As far as the sound goes, I like it. I still find myself riding around without the radio on and the windows down so I can hear it better. The level of the whoosh is largly dependent on how hard you're into the throttle. Under normal drive conditions with the radio at normal levels it's not overpowering in my opinion I think most of the time you won't really even notice it in the car.I wouldn't say you need it rather that it's a fun widget that's easy to add and doesn't cost a ton. HTH. |
