Hurst really doesn't replace the housing. The collar is an add-on after you install the shifter. Hurst provides three 1" high standoffs that replaces the 3 nuts that bolts the shifter assembly to the shifter bracket. Then the collar is installed on top of the standoffs.

When you take apart the shifter, there's a urethane bushing that supports the shift lever pivot ball at the bottom and comes out easily from the stock aluminum shifter housing. You will reuse both. Should note that there is a plastic spacer underneath the shifter assembly and the shifter bushing has a raised part that fits into that plastic spacer for alignment purposes.

My friend is thinking about buying a Hurst shifter for his GT, BUT we may just leave the collar off, instead of modding it. I figure I would have to grind the collar hole out to provide the clearance for reverse gear and maybe for the 1st & 2nd gears (like PVO PT did) and possibly remove part of the left wall of the collar. Without the collar installed, the Hurst shifter should have the same left travel as the stock shifter to shift all the gears to that side. He doesn't race or power shift (much) anyways, so leaving off the collar wouldn't be a big deal. But that's up to him. No problem either way for me.

To tell you the truth, the shift stop screws in the collar are pretty much worthless, if you follow the adjustment procedure, the screw ends up almost flush with the collar (one 360° screw/turn-in at most, with the screw starting flush with the collar).

That's why I wasn't disappointed running B&M . I shifted other cruisers with hurst installed and my mind says there's little if any difference in throw or feel between the 2 . It all comes down to personal preferance or trying to save a buck cuz the B&M can be almost $70.00 cheaper .

About a $35 difference. B&M, part #BMM 45105 at Martel's goes for $124.99 and Hurst, part #HUU-3914030 at Summit costs $159.95. Suppose it all depends if you want that engraved Hurst shifter handle or not. IMHO, either shifter does the job well. Not sure if B&M includes the polyurethane bushings for the shifter bracket. Hurst does, and it cuts down movement of the entire shifter bracket assembly. Solid metal bushings might be even better, but not sure if the shifter bracket can take the punishment or will eventually break from metal fatigue.

The MOPAR PERFORMANCE short-throw shifter is a direct, bolt-on, self-contained unit. It offers a dramatic improvement in shifting performance, due in large part to reduced shifter travel. Shift throw refers directly to the actual physical motion of the shifter stick, affecting the time it takes to shift from one gear to another. In performance driving scenarios, the additional seconds - or fractions of a second - a factory stock shifter takes to go from one gear to another may result in slower lap times. MOPAR's short-throw shifter gives racers and enthusiasts alike a competitive advantage.
