Twin, Saki is right. the gauge should read "0" with the engine off or even at an idle (boost only Gauge). There is an issue with that gauge. You might consider returning that gauge to the mfg or retail outlet where it was purchased, and spring for the difference and get a vac/boost gauge. This will be helpful in getting better gas mileage as well as triobleshooting vac problems (leaks etc..). I think that the issue with your gauge is that it is malfunctioning, not that it is the wrong kind.....

Make sure the gauge power is tapped into a fuse that remains on through start-up. If it doesn't your boost readings will be off. Needs a constant HOT source. I used fuse 10 for my boost gauge. If it is interrupted in start-up, your boost reading can be off by 5psi or more.

I don't know where you got that information. The boost gauge is mechanical. The only wires going to it are for the light inside the gauge. It will work correctly, assuming the gauge is not defective, without any power going to it. It appears that his gauge is defective in this case, however.

I never realized this but there is an electrical boost gauge that uses a MAP like sensor and connects electrically to the gauge. I have never seen one, but I have heard comments on it on the boards. I looked @ twins pic of the gauge again, and I do think that it is a mechanical boost gauge and the gauge is malfunctioning..........

GearHead,

I have the gauges that you are talking about.
I have the Cobalt Auto meter gauges. They are not Mech, but are all electric. My boost gauge has a map sensor, and we spent 2 days playing with it and it would not work.
After a call to auto meter we found that what Redman was saying is right.
It needed a constant hot power source. After that it worked fine.
I currently have the Boost (With Vac), Oil Press, and Air Fuel gauges (need to get this one wired up soon). Being that they were not Mech gauges, it made running the lines a lot easier.
If I can borrow my friend’s digital camera, I will show you where we mounted the map sensor… and what they look like.

I have an electric one...guess depends on the gauge. The Autometer one I have has it's own MAP sensor and power wires in addition to the light bulb. It is not mechanical. My bad if this gauge is.
Here is my MAP sensor before wiring. There is a harness to the gauge with 5 wires
