Default p0304 code

Took the wife's car in to our mechanic last week. Service engine light on. This code is for a misfire on #4. Here is what he did.

removed intake
replaced plugs and wires
cleared fault code
installed new coil
missfire still present
removed intake again and ohms test fuel injectors
no problem found with injectors

Now he's telling us to go to the dealer. Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Jay

He did ok except for changing out your coil. Everything else was a good shot at clearing the code. The one thing he didn't do was test for a vacuum leak around the edges of the upper manifold near the No#4 cylinder. The firing order from front to back is #1-#3-#4-#2.

is this car a turbo or non turbo? if it's a turbo they are notorious for the gasket to leak. local parts store should stock it.
if it's a non turbo, i'd order a new set of rubber gaskets for the upper manifold at the dealer.

Thanks, I hope a leaky manifold gasket will turn out to be the problem. My mechanic didn't say if he replaced the gasket when he took off the manifold. I just thought he would have. Jay

Manual doesn't call for gasket to be replaced...
I assume you are NOT a turbo, because there is no need to take off manifold to do plugs & wires on a turbo...

Missfire causes - in order

Plugs & wires - swap the wire - see if problem moves...

Intake manifold gasket - usually causes a rough idle - spray WD-40 or ingnition fluid along intake manifold seams - if idle smooths out, it's a definite intake gasket failure.

Faulty injector - swap injector with another cylinder, see if problem moves

Coil - usually causes at least 2 cylinders to not fire.

low compression - valve or ring problem... - quite rare.

Thank you for the help with my problem. This is a turbo-lite model. My mechanic said that the intake manifold had to be removed to change plugs so I thought he knew what he was talking about. Haven't had a chance to ask him if he replaced gasket. I'm thinking probably not since it wasn't listed on receipt. I will try spraying wd 40 on edges of intake.

This rough idle only seems to occur after the engine is warm and in Drive at idle. Car accelerates well and no problems other than at idle which is intermittent.

Thanks everyone and I will let you know what I find out with the manifold test.

I just posted on my results with same problems except mine was at all speeds, not just idle, wondering if you bought same aftermarket coil I did.
