I recently decided to remove the intake silencers in my 2003 GT. I had read that the pipe between the airbox and the turbo could be cut open and the VERY restrictive silencer removed. It can, but it requires some machine work to remove all the restrictions and then gluing it back together. I did this and wound up putting back the other silencers as they werent all that restrictive anyway. I like the results and it sounds good and looks perfectly stock if you like it that way. Im thinking of doing this for others if theres enough interest. It would cost about $80 exchange + shipping. Anybody out there interested?

$80 for a mod that can be done free and easy?

When I removed mine it left "bulkheads" at both ends with fairly small openings in them. That's what I machined out to get a smooth bore. Took an hour or so to do a good job. If you don't remove them you might as well not remove any of it.

Like I said in another topic, I shaved off .42 sec in the 1/4mile by removing all silencers. 3barboost talked about this issue some time ago and he pointed out that there is a restriction in the intake system.
the silencer on the turbo up pipe is the most scary one to remove... yes it requires to cut, bore and glue but after that, I was moving with less throttle pressure and the turbo was retaining 14 PSI in third gear after initial 15.25 that it bumps with stage one. Before this, I would get 15.25 then go down to 12 or 13 depending on the temp and humidity. Ian

BL since a new air intake system costs around $200 and looks nice too your idea would have to sell for about half of what you originally estimated its cost at in my opinion! My K&N system does what you are talking about and hangs a conical K&N on the other end too!!

I just stopped to read this post, and I'm confused. I removed both silencers, no cutting, no mending, everything went back with no problems, please clarify what this is referring to? gary

Gary;
I'm referring to the pipe that goes from the stock airbox to the turbo. It's built like a muffler with a fairly small tube down the center that has holes through it and baffle chambers around the outside(you can see some of it from the top end). The pipe is welded together at a flange near the bottom elbow where you can saw it apart and remove the inner tube. You then have to machine out the "bulkheads" in both ends that support the inner tube (a real PITA) and epoxy the whole mess back together. This is in addition to the 2 silencers in the airbox, and by far the most restrictive. I hope this answers your question. John
