Im planning on purchasing a intake system for my cruiser. what are your guys opinions on the new tyrhoon intake by k@n versus the airaid intake system? which one adds more horsepower? i know the airaid claims a 6hp increase but could not find stats for the typhoon. prices on both are about the same. thanks in advance.

I'm not sure there is much difference. From all that I have read, horsepower gains are about the same when you have a straight-through exhaust system. Many complain the performance cold-air intake systems are, for many, TOO LOUD--some are returning them because they are not happy.

Have you considered the BTG CAI? If you dont mind having loud noises, this seems like the best way to go.

I like the Airaid becasue is forms a box that seals against the hood to block out the engine compartment air. I have trimmed the hood seal at the air box to let more cool air into the air box. However it does not replace the pipe to the turbo. I spoke with Airaid and asked them about replacing this since they make intermediate tubes for many other cars. They said they may come out with one. In the mean time I purchases a couple of silicone couplings and am having a bit of 3" tubing fab'd to replace that part though.

Ok, We have been talking about the Typhoon system but did you noticed that K&N has finaly done the FIPK system???
![]() This is the system to buy instead of the Typhoon. I installed one a few months ago and it is trully a good kit. it is composite to keep the air cooler and it comes with a shield. here is the dyno sheet they posted on their website. i like the airaid a lot but this one goes all the way to the turbo. the only mod I would do is the oil catch can. Ian

The PN is 57-1531
It costs about $55.00 more than the typhoon FIPK 235.90 Typhoon 180.00 I am ordering my FIPK right now!! Ian BTW, I am in no way associated with K&N. I was realy waiting for this kit to come out.[?]

Sorrym, but I gotta say their test is BS. No way you're getting 12HP out of that motor by adding an intake to it. Especially since the PCM controls boost to limit torque output based on air density and a buch of other stuff.
Also, look at that dyno sheet...it was done in 2nd gear, and most professional dyno pulls I have seen are done in 3rd gear. In short, beleive what you want, but that's 255 bucks for phantom horsepower as far as I am concerned.

also plastic vs steal vs aluminum etc.... very minimal temperature difference.....

I think 3Bar Talked about the restriction the intake has on the turbo...
I removed two of the three silencers and improved performance by 0.3 sec.. when I removed the third one I improved another 0.1... This was with a square intake and lots of sharp edges in the tubing. (This was with the factory intake) The dyno issue is relative. Yes, it was done in a strange gear configuration but if you do them both at the same gear at the same conditions you will still see improvement or faliure... No matter in what gear you are. the reason it is done in third gear is because it will let the engine spin up longer and the computer will register better and most of the time is almost a 1:1 ratio. I heard the same comments when I did my tests with the G-tech. The HP where to low for the car. but if you use the same method again with a mod you will measure increse or decrease regardless of final figures. Metal and plastic... metal absorbs heat faster than plastic. If you think I am wrong, Tower Hobbies sells an IR temp scaner that measures heat by just pointing to the item to be tested for about $30.00. After driving around, remove the filter and point the scanner to the inside of the filter housing. then do the same to the metal intake tube.. you decide. IF metal and plastic are the same conducting heat, how come there are no plastic cooling fins in amplifiers... If you don't want to buy a scanner, touch a plastic part inside the engine compartment and then touch a metal one... One will feel hot, the other one will burn you... Some people here have actualy covered their metal intake pipes with insulation. I installed one of this FIPK systems on a 2001 S10 Blazer and the truck improved by half a seccond... It made a believer out of me. There are many options out there. you decide in the one that you like. I just presented an option and another point of view in this issue. Ian
