Default PT Cruiser Turbo Cam Shaft

Has anyone had a broken cam shaft in the 2.4 Lt Turbo engine? I have a 2004 PC Cruiser 2.4 Ltr Turbo that I took into the dealer today to have the oil changed and the transmission serviced. Four hours later I learned that while the technician was doing the first 15 minutes of a the transmission flush, the engine quit and would not restart, at first they said it was the cam shaft sensor, changing that did nothing, then they said that the timing belt had broken, I challanged that as I just had the timing belt changed. Finally they told me that the intake cam shaft, the one closest to the front of the car, had broken. When I asked the mechanic how many he had seen he told me that in 17 years only one, this one. Has anyone else heard of a broken cam shaft in this car?

No.

Impossible it just 'broke'

They ran it w/o oil, the cam seized and now they're trying to get the $ from you

They started lying, changed story as you challenged them

Quick update, today they state that the timing belt (recently changed by another shop) was too tight and it broke the pin that aligns the cam shaft sprocket. This pin breaking allowed the cam sprocket to spin on the shaft. Of course the pin is made onto the camshaft so the entire camshaft has to be replaced.

Does the timing belt have a tensioner and get tight by itself ?

I don't think so. The way cam gears are attached to the cams there's no way you could get that belt tight enough to snap it.

Have you laid eyes on the motor yourself? I'd go take a look, and take some pics.

Even if the cam did break, the odds of that happening while the car was in the shop are very very very slim.

Anyway, even if they did break, just swap in a set of 2.0s from a Neon. Few hp to be had and you can pick up a great set for under $60-- I'm sure that's far, far less than the dealer's going to charge you for replacement 2.4s.

Sounds VERY fishy. Never heard of a cam problem, nor of a "too tight" timing belt.

If im not mistaken, isn't the pin a dowel that can be removed? If so, maybe when the timing was done it was removed with then cam gear and not reinstalled correctly or wrong one installed.

Yeah i also agree with chris15, drop in some 2.0 cams (you can pick up used ones very cheaply and gain a little HP and nicer sounding to.

The pin will shear if the bolt wasn't properly torqued.

Here's the pin PN: 6100997
