Since I bought my PT GT the car has made a whirring/buzz noise most noticable in the morning/cold. This morning I started my PT and a puff of blue smoke came out the tail pipe, not good.I have not driven the car very much in the last few weeks and pulled it in and out of the garage last night but this really should not allow oil into the intake. Either the valve stem seals, rings, or the turbo are letting oil past. Just to check I pulled the inlet from the air box to the turbo off to check for oil at the inlet, none found.
However, I reached in and checked the turbine for any play and found at least .030 play. I can wiggle the turbine up and down. Looking in with a light I can almost get the blade to touch the housing. From my experience this is a no-no for turbos, there should be no play in the turbine blade assembly. The bearing/housing is going south.(3,700 mi.)It also appears that there is a little exhaust getting in to the inlet side, soot and it smells like exhaust. I am going to take it to the dealer but I expect them to give me a hard time about it since it has not failed. I do not want it to fail and send shrapnel/oil etc. into the intake! Good thing I have not installed my Stage I yet as this could have easily been blamed on stage I. What do you cruisers think? How should I approch the dealer? |

There may be leaks in the oil cooling lines for the turbo. Be very careful about how you approach the dealer. Make sure your car has NOTHING on it in terms of mods. My assembly went at about 20K, and the dealer blamed my BOV. Learn from my experience...

Thanks Punch,
Good article, .003" to .006" for axial play sounds about right to me. Chryslers spec who knows? Does your manual list a spec for the axial play? I have to get a factory manual, I usually wait until the car is out of warranty. |
