Default Thinking of a GT Cruiser next

Ive kinda fallen for my na PT Cruiser and now Im thinking later on of getting the GT. I had a 350hp big turbo SRT-4 and the manual tranny in it sucked. It was stubborn shifting and even after getting another one IT was still stubborn. My question is, is the GT the same tranny? Ive been debating auto or manual but I dont think the auto will hold up to what I want to do.

Welcome!

You really think you'll like the PT GT after ditching the SRT-4?

First of all, unless you plan on rebuilding a transmission over and over go with a 5-speed (they're equipped with a Getrag). Other than the clutch, you won't have to worry about much after putting some mods to it.

Also, with a 5-speed you can forget going with a staged PCM just the same way one would avoid it with an SRT-4 (DSP ALL THE WAY).

Btw, what turbo did you go with to only put out 350hp? I bet you got at least 405w/tq though right? There's a local SRT forum here and I know alot of the guys here running everything from stock turbo's on meth/e85, 50trim, delta46 and S3K-variants.

Coming from owning a modified PT GT, I'd go with an SRT-4 any day of the week. Just my opinion of course!

I feel alittle too old for an SRT-4, to me its for the younger crowd. I did the SRT back in 04 so they market was new. I had the AGP 50 trim but boost was turned down low cause I was out of injector and never upgraded. The guy I sold to upgraded the injectors and upped boost and got right at 400hp.

The SRT has been gone for a long time and I thought a big turbo PT would be an awesome project, age appropriate, and a great sleeper. I hated the tranny in my SRT though, would not shift.

Ah, yeah you ran out of fuel...it happens

As for the PT being a sleeper, so true. Be shocked to hear about all the people I surprised with my PT.

Well, make sure it's a 5-speed. An '04-'05 will be your best bet...preferably a late '05 so you don't have to do the intake manifold swap and it'll carry the 577cc injectors. It's the same as the SRT-4's, the '03 PT GT's had smaller pink 527cc injectors whereas '04 and above had the 577cc AKA Stage 1 injectors.

The shifting on my srt4 tranny is a bit notchy and not a tranny that would be good to learn to drive on. A short throw shifter really helped out mine. I'm 59 yrs old. Am I to old for a srt4? Not a chance.

My buddy has a big turbo 400+ hp 5 speed tranny GT. Big giggles driving that one. Even with the best aftermarket clutch he could find it still slips coming off of the line. Gotta watch them axles! Gobs of power he can't get totally to the ground. Still, the car is really fun to drive around. I got to open it up to 125mph on a desert straightaway near his home and there still was a lot more left. He has a one of a kind racing pcm with the speed governed at 160 mph. Don't think I'd want to drive a PT that fast, though. His isn't a great daily driver so you might want to keep that na PT around.
