Default Broke PT Turbo and Broke daughter

I need help, daughters PT running like crap. may be a Turbo may not be. It drives fine up to about 40-45 and then loses power and starts sputtering, and Turbo doesn't seem to kick-in no whine or grinding or any thing, a little smoke not much. May be a boost leak but I have checked all hoses and lines with no apparent leaks. I have not done a boost test or a smoke test yet. Chris @ Turbos Unleashed suggested Cat Converter , I wonder if one of the relays that control BOV or WAG me be bad? Any suggestions?

What he means is get the codes (if there are any showing)

Might also be a fuel/spark issue.

One other problem to check is the catalytic converter.

If it is plugged it will cause this and even more so with the turbo because it limits the exhaust flow.

Chromer don, I have a code reader and no codes were found.

Morkeste and Gawin , I have yet to check the Cat, as others have suggested but I would think that it would act up at low R's as well as higher R's same way with fuel. I'm just really stumped right now.

Remove the front o2 sensor and take it for a test drive.

Low RPMs do not build as much pressure so it flows through it is when you bring up the volume of gasses at higher RPM the worse it gets. I have had this issue on 2 previous cars 1 NA and 1 Turbo.

with a catalytic problem the more RPM's the worse the problem is the less RPM the less the problem.

Not sure if I used this analogy with you or not but think about breathing through a regular drinking straw while walking around the block. Now try sprinting around the block using the same straw to breathe through. The faster you run the more air needs to travel through that same sized straw.

The same goes for an engine, but, with a turbo engine it's even worse. Turbochargers can artificially double the size of your engine when boosting to 14.7psi (1 bar). The catalytic convertor will now see twice as much airflow then a non-turbo engine at full throttle. If only partially blocked low RPM driving will not be affected. The backpressure created will exert force on the back of the seal causing it to be forced up against the spinning turbine shaft. The carbon seal is no match for the inconel turbine shaft and your turbo will fail.

Hope that makes sense,

Chris-TU

Thanks Chris, appreciate the feedback and your expertise I do value your comments as well as the e-mails back and forth looks like I will be contacting you.
Well after a long day of diagnosis and replacing the basic items , I have come to the conclusion after checking the side play and back and forth play that my daughters turbo is shot, after just being replaced a little over a year ago prior to my daughter buying it, looks like I will be replacing the turbo. Any suggestions ? Maybe a rebuild? She can't afford to be down for a long period of time any chance you have a rebuilt unit to send and then I will send the core back. I don't think it will be necessary to send back the manifold as it was also just replace. Sorry for long reply.

Try turbosunleashed for a reasonable price, good turbo.
The oil lines to turbo MUST be replaced, as they are probably clogged. It is a MUST to use synthetic oil in turbos, regular oil chars and clogs oil lines.
