Default PCV Valve On 2004 PT Cruiser GT

I've been looking at post after post and am a little concerned about my car. It was blowing some blue white smoke and so I changed the PCV valve. The one I took off was hollow and the new one is exactly like all PCV valves I've seen in the past with a ball inside. In some posts I read there is no ball on the PCV for the GT and it's just an aspirator. Other posts indicate the possibility that the valve came apart. Can anyone say for sure which is correct? I'm having the turbo changed as that is what is suspect in the smoke, but we could be wrong. I've been told that the factory turbo is usually only good for a little over 60K, and I've got 94K. Thanks.

I would change the PVC first that info about the turbo is incorrect. It is highly dependent on how you treat your pt. If you're at wot all the time and don't give it run down time. Letting it idle or normal driving for ten minutes or so to cool the turbo. You could go through a turbo pretty quick. Check for side to side play on the impeller shaft. If tight look elsewhere first.

I did change the pcv and that is my real question. Does it have a ball inside? It didn't cure the problem when I changed it. It has to be the turbo or valve seals/guides, but several experts have ALL said the symptoms point to the turbo.

BTW, I don't beat on my cars, and this one was just purchased as a replacement for a '03 GT that my grandson totaled. We had to change the turbo on that one shortly after 60K and that was when a turbo specialist told me that the turbo only last about 60K.

Just don't see that kind of turbo failures as a whole on this forum. Most only join because of a problem of some kind.

What kind of explanation did he give you to substantiate this BS?

I can see the turbo only lasting 60k if it was not properly maintained with consistent synthetic oil changes, avoiding hot shutdowns, etc.

When properly maintained the turbo can last above the 200k mile range.

OurPTGT and chromer don like this.

This thread has completely missed the point, but I'll give an update. First off, I was asking about the PCV valve, not the turbo. The valve cover was pulled and the insides of the PCV were indeed inside the valve cover. So the answer to my question is that the PCV on a turbo car is a PCV and not an aspirator as some on this forum had indicated. The valve cover seal was most probably the main culprit in my smoking. The tech also found two loose spark plugs and the wires were shot. We just got this car two weeks ago as a replacement for another PT GT that was totaled. The turbo was chewed up inside, so something definitely got in there, but it probably wasn't the source of my problem, but it's a brand new turbo now, so the car is fine.

As far as the turbo question about lasting 60K, I was told that when my OEM turbo went bad in our '03 PT GT. I was told that the quality of the Chrysler turbos wasn't the best. I'm only repeating what I was told and my turbo on the '03 was definitely bad. Hope this answers any questions. As always your mileage may differ.

Rick

I may have misunderstood. I took your 60k mile turbo life statement as the 'turbo tech' meant it was norm. Which i do not think it true with normal syn oil changes. I have upgraded to the MOPAR S3 turbo and pretty much beat on it everyday and 95k miles with no issues. The Mitsubishi MHI turbos used in the PT's have been around for a while so i don't think it's their lack of quality either.
Did you keep the bad turbo?
