Default '03 Turbo Exhaust timing

'03 5 speed manual turbo. Once the timing belt cover was taken off, my mehchanic noticed "this" (see image) Timing exhuast looks like has been advanced (retarded?) one "notch" Last owner did not do this.
Why would this have been done?? Is this factory?
Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!!

I bought a replacement motor (64K) miles looked like the tension had never been set on the timing. Looks like your tensioner is a bit off too

You can change the camshaft timing by advancing or retarding the camshafts either each the same or separately which will change the power curve of the engine. On the 2.4 your would need adjustable cam gears to accomplish this. There is not other way except to machine key-ways to use off-set keys to change cam timing.

It appears that your timing marks are correct anyway. If you rotate the assembly everything does look as it they are all appropriate for reasonable measurements.

I am not saying anything absolute from a picture but
look at the picture and imagine all the parts rotating slightly counter clockwise

If you do rotate it, it will be off. Look at the bottom mark. No play left. It's off of a tooth. The stuff looks like it's been done at some point. With no history. Replace anyway.

so after looking for other information from the OP and seeing no other indication of engine issue like lack of power you think from a picture I am wrong and you are right? I would say more information is really needed.

I first looked at the stats of the OP before responding You DID NOT. I am the only current visitor there.

Part of giving advise and or recommendation is first finding out as much as possible about the complaint.
The only compliant here in this thread was about the EXHAUST camshaft being correct by a picture . Looks correct to me! IN THE PICTURE?

Do we not see that the question was about the camshaft to crankshaft alignment come up often regarding OHC and DOHC engines.

Yes. I see it.

Considering that the same number of belt teeth have to always be between the crank gear and the exhaust gear on the left side, if the belt had stretched a few millimeters the marks on a properly timed engine would look exactly like in the photo.

I could be wrong but I believe this engine was properly timed but the belt has stretched to some degree.

I don't see it. One lines up wit the center line one does not. Will look again on the computer later. Using the phone screen. Either way change that sucker and make sure they don't line up that way going back.
