Cool General Staged Turbo Problems - or Increased Maintenance

Just a general question for you gear heads...
The Cruiser that I am considering buying has had Stage 1.
And, it's an auto tranny.

Outside of a few less miles per gallon with mileage, what increased long-term costs should be expected to maintain a "staged'turbo", versus stock turbo.

Sorry for my ignorance.

Shouldn't be any difference. Unless you drive it harder. Then you will need to do maintenance at a quicker interval. JMHO.

A STAGE 1 Chrysler/MOPAR PCM will not change any normal maintenance schedule.Nor will having it prematurely wear any part of the engine or transmission.
Your average MPG will still depend of the condition of the engine and it state of tune.
Theoretically you should actually increase your MPG because of the changes that were done to the PCM calibration. Not to mention all or discus them on this thread but one was the timing maps.

It is not ignorance on your part be any means. Very few really know much about the mechanic's of them and logged a comparison data of information between a stock PCM and the STAGE 1.

The TCM changes with the STAGE 1 are even a bigger mystery about calibration changes effecting the transmission shifting capabilities.

Yep,

My research indicates the Stage 1 will just give a mild performance boost. I talked this over at length with Nitro and he told me he's found very little horsepower increase. But that's likely at higher RPM's near peak HP. Others report a nice seat-of-the-pants performance increase in the normal driving range. No one seems to know what it does for the transmission. Again, Nitro said he knows what the Stage 1 ECM does to the transmission but not necessarily why it does it. And how that relates to any change in driving experience is up in the air.

My Stage 1 is on the way. And I am excited to try it out. At best I hope to get the mild performance boost. And at worst, it will just increase the value of my PT. Based on what I've found, I expect no bad effects since I drive normally and won't be overtaxing the car. Of course, there will be definitely be a "Handy Stage 1" thread. So stay tuned.

Some have even reported BETTER mileage....

Yep.

Several folks do report that. Not just the one local self-proclaimed expert.

I figure it is similar to putting a gentle performance cam in a small block Chevy. The improved timing may make the engine slightly more efficient, but at the cost of emissions.

Pardon my ignorance frank but if the car your looking at was a Turbo Lite and then the Stage 1 was added, the engine then needs to be run on premium fuel (for optimum performance) whereas the Lite used regular. That would certainly add to the long tern costs of running the car. If however, it was already a full turbo/GT and the Stage 1 added, everything that was already said above comes into play.

Talking Re: General Staged Turbo Problems - or Increased Maintenance

Thanks all!
The answers where exactly what I was hoping for, and expected.

As for gas octane, I only use premuim and synthetic oil in my turbos.

And, all the years that I have had turbos, last weekend was the only time that I ever REALLY PUNCHED IT and put a strain on the tranny!
It was at a light where two lanes merge into one after the light, and then merge onto an expressway.
I could see this jerk in a jacked up late model Ford pickup in my rear view mirror, just coasting towards the light change to get a jump on me!
NOT!
The GT vert left him in the dust....and he was trying believe me!

Otherwise, with the turbo I use the pedal sparingly!
