You can't tell by looking at the motor. You can, however, tell by looking at the outside of the car or by the transmission shifter inside. Here's how:

If the car is a GT it's a 220HP, no ifs ands or buts.
If the turbo motor is in anything but a GT it's a 180HP, no ifs ands or buts.

Emblems shaved? Look at the shifter inside.
If it's an autostick or a 5 speed then you've got a 220HP (provided you know for sure there's a turbo under the hood!). If it's just a plain old automatic it's a 180HP (again, provided you know a turbo lurks inside). You can not get a 180HP with a 5 speed or Autostick. You can not get a 220HP with a basic automatic. You can get a non turbo with either the autostick or 5 speed, so make sure you know there's a turbo in there.

One other thing; you also can't tell by looking if Stage 1 is installed. Unless you can lift up the hoses and wiring around the PCM and read the sticker on it.

Might want to being a PT fanatic with you, if you are purchasing a specific turbo model.

best bang for buck is the 180hp with stage 1, youll have to switch to premium gas but it'll rip.
im trying to talk a friend into the convert with the 180 then put on the stage 1
