I own a 2001 PT that is fully built (performance), that is. Built it up before the GT was released. If I had the option I may have traded for a GT. However being my car was payed for I would have taking a bath. I also enjoy ripping all of my cars apart and starting over so the GT would not have been an exception. I would have already had it apart to see what we can be improved upon.
That being said I am extremely happy with my set up:

Fully built HRC Turboed 2.4: Wiseco pistons, T2 rods, Port & Polished head (Bob Special) with oversize Stainless Steel valves, #14 Crane Cams, Adjustable Crane Cam gears, AF/X UDP, 3" custom downpipe, 3" hi flow exhaust
No balance shafts, Ported GT intake manifold, Bored Throttle Body, 30lb injectors, On board Wideband.

I am lucky enough to have the ability to fix, build, or create just about anything I need to for my car. I have ~15,000 miles on this setup now with no problems, even putting this kind of power through the 41TE tranny (knock on wood). I do have a few back up options when if the tranny happens to tell me he has had enough.

This PT is totally reliable, averaging 23.9 MPG and a blast to drive. I have not seen a GT achieve the #'s I have put down at the dyno 235 HP 265 TQ; that is at only 9 psi of boost. I am very cautious with the car so I avoid just cranking the boost up. I also don't have a lot of time to play with it so have not had time to tweak it and take it back. I want to be running closer to 12-13 psi and see what she can do.

There is NO concern with the stregnth of the actual block. Yes the GT block can handle more abuse but we will never come close to the power levels needed to break this baby. The internals on the PT's do need some attention however. That will take time, money, and knowledge.

I think the GT is a great car and one should consider trading up if they want more power and do not have the money or know how to improve their PT. The specifically engineered PCM and electronics for a turbo is a very big advantage.

If the above does not apply you can certainly build a fantastic aftermarket PT turbo you will be happy with.

Ant these were my numbers a year ago prior to stage 1. I hope to go by MX-5 again this year and see what the Stage 1 did for me...

Hey Mike just a quick shout to say thanks for the great time. It was nice meeting you,The Wife, and all the folks at the event. I am very pleased with my results....253.2 hp and 366.2 torque on the bottle and on just the factory turbo 191.7 hp and 249.8 torque. Can't wait to get the stage one upgrade installed now

Wow!, Didn't expect this kind of response. Great thoughts from everyone, I have paid off the PT and would take a beating if traded in or sold. The transfering of body kits, interior mods would be nice but I have upgraded all the speakers and added Muth signal mirrors. Those items would be next to impossoble to transfer. Great Idea, however. I will be under the guidance of a good friend who owns a shop that builds turbo systems from scratch. I will look up some of the guys mentioned in your responses. thanks again[8)]

I had the engine out in ~1 day. The HRC fuel system in with wiring and tubing installed in ~2 days. The new engine bolted up with turbo in ~2days. Wrapped it all up in another ~2days.
I did all the work alone; with the exception of my wife who was under the car with me ([?]) dropping the gas tank, and my friend helping guide the new engine up into the body.
If I had a lift (I have 1 at my house now!!) I could have cut some good time off of that.
I would say a shop not familiar with the PT should take about 2 weeks for the entire swap.
Of course you didn't say what was being done with the engine, and if you were using the HRC kit or a custom kit. If they are rebuilding the engine and making their own kit add another few weeks at least on to that!

Your car is great looking. If u own it, I'd say keep it and go with the Hahn. You've done quality work on it, so with Bob's help, you can make it go as fast as it looks. Your gonna spend the money, why not direct it to something new on the car, rather re-doing everything on a new car?

My thought exactly! thanks for the input and thanks for checking out my site. I'll be re-constructing it soon to reflect the new changes.

Enjoy the ride[8)]
